Sirius hummed as he opened the sharpie with his mouth, holding the cap between his teeth as he hovered over Lily’s arm to create his masterpiece. He started by drawing a cute, cartoonish version of Lily. “I had a broken arm in year nine,” Sirius said around the plastic as he doodled in Lily’s hair. “James drew so many dicks on my cast that our head of house made me tie a scarf around the whole thing. It was truly a beautiful sight.” He smirked at the memory; just one of countless shenanigans they’d got up to at the posh Scottish boarding school.

“I’m sure it was, Red.” Sirius bent to pick up a fallen notebook, handing it to her with a grin on his face. “Wish I’d seen it. James said you got at least 10 feet high.” He eyed her cast with interest. “Can I sign it?”
Tumblr media
Lily gave Sirius an appreciative smile and took her notebook, shoving it in with the rest of her books. She’d given up trying to be organized on the go when she didn’t have both hands to help her. Red bloomed across her cheeks at the mention of James and his witness of her stupidity, but she was actually glad that he had been there, and he’d been a huge help to her. “At least,” she said with a roll of her eyes. “I didn’t even know it was broken at first.” At Sirius’ request, she pulled a sharpie from her bag and handed it to him, nodding. “Of course, nothing dirty, though!” She teased. “I have to wear this cast for six weeks.”

“It was a good idea at the time, okay?” Lily did her best to shove her books into her bag one handed, letting out a frustrated huff. Her arm hurt and she still felt like an idiot for getting on the trampoline wasted.

“I wouldn’t say rough, Pete—I’d call it ruggedly enticing.” Sirius grinned, rubbing a hand over his stubbled jaw. “Course it will be,” he agreed as he watched Peter type for a moment. “I’ll give it a go, mate, but do you really think I can get Marlene to stop doing anything she wants to do?” His grin gave way to a look of suspicion as he considered what he’d been told. “What exactly is she nagging you about? You aren’t letting the girls mess with our baby, are you?”

“You do have the skin of a porcelain doll, Wormy,” Sirius replied, “Just can’t stay away. But your dolphin smoothness isn’t gonna get this app off the ground.”
Tumblr media
“So says you, the one with the rough skin.” He grinned, but decidedly turned his gaze back to the laptop. “This app is going to be brilliant.” He paused, “Speaking of, can you get Marlene to stop nagging me about it? She’s started sending me messages on Instagram.”

Once Sirius got his teeth into something, it was hard for anyone to convince him to let it go, and this had been niggling at him for over a week now. He crossed his arms over his chest, jaw set, as he listened to James’s reasoning. He just didn’t see how he could sit on the sidelines and not interfere.
“He’s keeping secrets from me,” he said to James, trying to keep the whine out of his voice. “I know he’s, like, Moony—he keeps a lot under the surface and all that—but...” Sirius swallowed. There were a lot of things about Remus’s crush that bothered him, but this part of it wasn’t something he’d admit to anyone except James. “He tells me stuff. Usually. Except this time, he didn’t. He told you, he told Dorcas...the only reason I know about it at all is because he was so plastered the other night, he forgot himself.”
Sirius ran a hand through his hair. He thought about tying it up to make himself stop messing with it; he was going to give himself the signature James Potter I-stuck-my-head-in-a-blender look if he wasn’t careful. He hopped off the counter, throwing his mostly-uneaten breakfast in the bin. He didn’t think his appetite would be coming back anytime soon. Not if he was forced to keep thinking about Remus dating—someone taking Remus out, taking Remus home, touching him...
At James’s question, Sirius immediately said “Yes” before he could think it through. He knew it was stupid, but he dug his heels in, adding, “Great idea, Prongsie. All we need to do is find out who the object of Moonys affection is and have a nice little chat with him.”
siriuslyitssirius‌:
Sirius stared hard at James for a long moment before muttering, “You’ve been hanging ‘round with Evans too long. You’re starting to sound like her.”
He didn’t care if he was being a bit rude; James seemed content to take the high road here, and Sirius wasn’t content with that. This was too important, far too important, to leave everything to chance. Sirius rubbed a hand over his jaw, brow furrowed and mouth turned down in a frown as he thoroughly rejected the idea of doing nothing. He shook his head.
“We can’t just twiddle our thumbs and hope things play out the way he deserves them to,” Sirius said, fixing James with an imploring look this time. “If this guy’s messing with Remus, or stringing him along, or if he’s just a stupid wanker, or…” He cut himself off, glaring into the distance. He didn’t want to go too far down that road; the very idea of Remus being with someone who was capable of hurting him the way Greyback had made Sirius see red. He gripped the edge of the counter until his knuckles turned white.
Sirius met James’s gaze again. The only word he said was “Prongs,” but his face and tone conveyed a lot more: I can’t let this go. I won’t. Are you with me, or not?
He couldn’t help but smirk at his best friend, “I’m taking that as a compliment since she’s more put together than all us combined.”
Still, the mischievious look was gone quite quickly the longer Sirius went on ranting. He wasn’t quite positive over what Sirius was feeling on the inside about Remus in particular. He didn’t want to assume, regardless if he said something in his head or not (especially since Sirius and him had a way of indirectly speaking).
When Sirius was finished, James raised a single eyebrow and tilted his head slightly. “Padfoot?” He was asking much more however: Is it really just platonic worrying that’s got you upset? But instead of waiting for an answer, James spoke out loud. “I get you, mate. I do. The idea that he could end up…that someone could hurt him like that again…It’s not a worry I have that just goes away.” Prongs felt his back tense so he took a calming breath. “But to interfere with his life so much would only make it worse for everyone involved.”
His inquisitive tone returned once more, his observations from the back of his mind coming forward a bit, “Are we supposed to scare off every bloke who’s interested in him?” Still, he wondered if it was just platonic worry that was making Sirius act the way he was.

Sirius ran a hand through his hair as he considered James’s question. “I dunno. Both?” he replied with a frown. The plate of bacon and eggs clattered onto the counter, forgotten, as he lost interest in eating.
“Doesn’t this bother you?” he pressed. In his opinion, this development warranted an emergency Marauders council meeting; it wasn’t every day that Remus let slip he had feelings for some mystery person. Not knowing their identity was going to drive Sirius mad. “Whoever he is, he’s the first bloke after Fuckface,” he couldn’t help but hiss his nickname for Greyback through gritted teeth, “that Moony’s given the time of day. You know Remus—that’s something.”
He needed to know if this guy was even marginally worthy of Remus’s affection, in the event that Remus finally cracked and asked him out. “He was well pissed when he let it slip to me at the party, saying all this stuff about how he’s basically unloveable and doesn’t deserve any better than what he got last year.” It made Sirius’s throat tighten just thinking about it.
Stuffing another piece of fruit into his mouth, James pushed back any retort he had in mind. He’d been trying to watch what he said around people. He eyed the forgotten food, knowing it meant things were more serious than usual.
Deciding it was time for the food to go away, James covered up the fruit salad and listened as he placed it back in the fridge. “He texted me about a mystery crush he had.” Wiping his hands, he turned back to Sirius, leaning against the counter across from him. “I think whoever this crush may be, Remus deserves to figure out how he feels about this person, without us interfering. No offense mate but we’re terrifyingly protective and we’ll both end up making things more stressful for him.”
James held back how terrifying it was to see Remus enter the dating world again, since that wouldn’t help Sirius relax. “Besides, Remus knows he’s not alone this time if things don’t work out. Which I’m hoping it does because he deserves the best, our Moony.”

@barista-james:
James hid a satisfied smirk behind his once forgot to-go cup of coffee. He frowned at the cooling flavor but drank it nonetheless. He’d need the caffeine in case their discussion ended up with them sharing a bottle of whiskey. Standing up, James threw out his finished apple, eyes flicking to the hallway to make sure Remus’ things were still missing.
Satisfied, James opened the fridge, plucking out the fruit salad his mum had dropped off earlier in the week. His eyebrows raised at Padfoot’s admission. “Oh?” Grabbing a fork from the drawer, he sat back down. Stabbing at a piece of melon, James stared deeply at Sirius. “This bothers you.” He was attempting to figure out how best to approach, after all James was dealing with an odd situation for their friend group.
“Hmm,” tapping lightly against the side of the container, “Is it that he fancies someone or that he simply won’t tell you the name?”
Sirius ran a hand through his hair as he considered James’s question. “I dunno. Both?” he replied with a frown. The plate of bacon and eggs clattered onto the counter, forgotten, as he lost interest in eating.

@barista-james:
James barely flinched at the fruit being thrown his way. It wasn’t his fault his mother instilled a fear of the family’s Hindu beliefs into him. As soon as football season ended, James would be back to eating whatever he wanted–within a limit, of course. He had an image to maintain.
He shifted back enough to give Sirius some space, his friend had a habit of rebelling in all aspects of his life. Chairs included. Between Remus having a crush on someone and Sirius being in a mood, James was ready for things to be normal again. Bloody hell, Peter was the most put together of them all lately.
“That’s debatable,” his tone meant one thing, he wasn’t going to bullshit when his friend was bothered by something. “And I wouldn’t take advantage of her like that. When she says yes, I want her to be the most sober possible so there’s no take-backs.” He forced himself to look away from the bacon, taking a slightly more aggressive bite of his apple. Chewing, “What’s up mate? Doctor James is here to listen.”
Sirius laughed, shaking his head. He had to hand it to James; the guy had an indomitable spirit, especially when it came to winning the heart of Lily Evans. He resented the redhead just a little for the amount of James’s free time she occupied, but he liked her well enough. Sirius thought he might be growing on her, too, however much she might try to deny it.
Part of Sirius wanted to keep bantering on about Lily, or bacon, or anything except what was actually on his mind. But if anyone could be trusted to help him make sense of his shit, it was James. He chewed another forkful of his fry-up before sighing loudly and rolling his eyes up at the ceiling like he was giving up the game.
“It’s Moony,” he whined, looking at James again and frowning. “He fancies someone and won’t tell me who it is.”

Sirius cocked an eyebrow as the man immediately pivoted from angry and aggressive to timid and embarrassed. It reminded him unpleasantly of his father, who’d often go from calmly detached to irrational rage as though someone had flipped a switch. Mood swings were a cornerstone of The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, after all; Sirius could be mercurial himself, depending on the circumstances.
The stranger in front of him apologized, adding that he was new in town and looking to meet people—all of which sounded ordinary enough, but something about his eyes as he’d first turned around, before he’d schooled his expression, left a bad taste in Sirius’s mouth.
“Probably shouldn’t hang around in front of a massive open flame, then, yeah?” Sirius wisecracked in response to the stranger’s assertion that he got nervous around fire. He heard Remus’s voice in his head telling him to be nice, and sighed, adding, “You go to UCL, or?”
siriuslyitssirius‌:
Sirius, night owl that he was, had just got out of an evening lecture and was taking a shortcut through the park, heading toward the bonfire. A sizable crowd had already gathered as he wove through groups of friends and families who were eating, drinking, and writing down their messages to be ceremoniously tossed into the flames. He planned to pick a spot by the main event and then text his friends to meet up. He had a flask of warm, whiskey-spiked apple cider in the inner pocket of his jacket, and he planned on sharing it with his fellow Marauders. Maybe he’d even burn a message this year—a proper one, not just a cartoon scribbling of Walburga’s face as he’d done in years past.
While he was searching for his spot, Sirius brushed shoulders with a man leaning against a tree. He thought nothing of it until the man rounded on him, spitting out a watch where you’re going as though Sirius had run headfirst into him.
“Oi, alright,” Sirius said, throwing his hands up in mock surrender. “Chill, mate.”
Eyes narrowed as Fenrir looked over the man. This–this was hair boy. He had to be careful, hopefully try and bleed a little something out of hair boy, even if every fiber of his being was telling him to pick up hair boy and throw him straight into the bonfire. Instead, he let out a soft sigh, head shaking a bit. “Sorry.” He did his best to come off as genuine, as sincere. He had always been pretty good at playing the nice guy, at least in public. “Just a little jumpy I guess. Fire makes me nervous.”
Eyes dropped, and Fenrir hoped that he looked embarrassed, as that was what he was going for, he even pulled his bottom lip through his teeth. After a moment, he let out a sigh, looked up again. “But I wanted to get out, since I’m new around here. Try and make friends.” The toe of his shoe lightly scuffed some dirt and he added, “Guess I’m not doing a very good job, eh.”

Fenrir had one goal at this ridiculous little bonfire, and that was to find Remus again. Eyes wandered the crowd from where he’d perched against a tree, beer in hand. Plenty of faces. Foolish people having a grand old time in a park with fire. He could appreciate the enjoyment of fire, sure, but he couldn’t quite get behind the idiots being so damn excited about it. However, he did his best to keep the disgust off his face. That was, until, someone walked past his spot and grazed him with their shoulder, and his eyes narrowed as he rounded on them. “Could you watch where you’re going?”

@barista-james:
James had spent the past week rushing from one place to the other. Not to say he wasn’t enjoying it. After all, being able to see Lily Evans more frequently since her tumble off a trampoline, was delightful. Even if she threatened his life sometimes. Still, he’d felt guilty for nearly disappearing between their party and now.
Which was precisely why, as soon as he could, he planned to spend every second inside the flat. Whether his mates missed him or not was besides the point. They certainly did, in his mind. Finally done for the week with modules and work, James Potter silently dropped his things onto the couch and sought out the slightly melancholy mood coming from the kitchen.
He stayed leaning against the entrance, watching Sirius sway with the music, avoiding thinking about how much the smell of bacon was so tempting, yet, also knew he’d avoid eating pork at all costs. Mama Potter would be disappointed.
Deciding it was time to approach his brother, James shuffled his feet to make noise as he sat down at the counter. He gave a nod, “Padfoot.” He waited a moment, testing the waters before deciding to speak up, “So aside from poisoning your body with bacon, you alright, mate?” He tilted his head slightly, already knowing something was up with the Marauders’ dynamics. He’d been busy, but not too busy to not notice how odd him and Remus were acting.
Sirius snorted, picking up a stray apple on the counter and tossing it over his shoulder at James in response to the bacon jab. He was just glad it wasn’t football season, when James would force his ultra-healthy diet regimen on the entire team, including Sirius, in his quest for ultimate victory. (Sirius wanted to win, too—but, you know, also drink beer and eat pizza. Both of which were banned by Prongs during playoffs, the bloody sadist. He’d had to resort to hiding his stash in the girls’ fridge next door. The things he’s pushed to!)
He slid his deliciously fried breakfast from the pan onto a plate and grabbed a fork, hopping up to sit on the countertop facing James. He wasn’t surprised James could see straight past the surface and pick up on his real mood, but he was reluctant to talk about Remus. It was already taking up too much headspace. "Better than Red, I reckon,” he said evasively, spearing a bit of egg and bacon and making a show of savoring the greasy bite. “Did she take enough pain meds to finally say yes to going out with you?”

Sirius | James
It was half past ten and Sirius was singing along to “Life on Mars” as he swayed in front of the stovetop, frying a pan’s worth of eggs and bacon. To the casual observer, he seemed in a cheerful mood: he was switching between reciting the lyrics and humming as he pushed a spatula around the pan, his shoulders relaxed under his old Siouxsie and the Banshees t-shirt. In reality, he was distracted, thoughts of one Remus J. Lupin flitting back and forth across his mind like a flock of incessant birds. He pushed his free hand through his hair hanging loose down to his shoulders, sighing. It seemed making breakfast was not a good enough distraction from his original, Moony-shaped distraction.
Sirius was glad things between him and Remus seemed to be back on track after nearly a week’s worth of...well, not wrongness exactly, but certainly not-right-ness. Remus had held him and let himself be held as they’d done for each other many times before, and whatever distance had been forming between them had closed in the instant the distance between their bodies had. They were good; things were good.
But a persistent voice in the back of Sirius’s head reminded him he still didn’t know who Remus wanted to be with—who Remus didn’t think himself good enough for, who Remus was seemingly trying his best to get over.
Sirius frowned, turning the music up a few notches and trying to lose himself in the licks of the guitar, the croons of Bowie’s vocals. He flipped the sizzling bacon with a flick of his wrist, trying not to think about how much he wanted a cigarette. Why the fuck did he ever let Moony talk him into quitting?
He looked over his shoulder as he heard someone join him in the small kitchen. “Prongs,” Sirius said in greeting, giving him a nod.

Sirius stayed quiet for a long moment. He cuddled in close, taking strength from the warmth of the embrace as much as he hoped Remus could draw strength from him. “Thank you,” he whispered. “I know, it’s just...sometimes it’s just, same old, same old, you know. My family...I mean, fuck them, I have no regrets, but...” he paused, sighing. Now probably wasn’t the time. “I know I can talk to you. And I appreciate it. And...thank you. Same to you.”
The room was dark and peacefully quiet, and Sirius felt the pull of sleep on his eyelids as he relaxed in Remus’s arms. “G’night, Moonshine,” he mumbled as he began drifting off.

Remus cuddles were far and away the superior cuddles in his life, Sirius decided as the other boy curled into his personal space and let himself be held. “I get that,” he said softly, looping his arms around Remus’s waist to keep him close. “I’ve got shit, too. More than…sometimes more than I want to bother you lot with. But I get being stuck in your own head, I promise.” He gave Remus a lopsided grin. “I’ll just have to keep reminding you how great you are until you believe me.”

“You could never bother me or anyone else.” Remus replied softly, wrapping one of his arms around Sirius, the other going up to card through his hair. “I’m always, always here for you. No matter what. And I’ll be here to remind you of how great you are as well.” He paused for a second. “Because you are, Sirius Black. You are so beyond brilliant and I’m so bloody lucky to have you in my life.” Remus smiled and let his hand drop, resting against Sirius’ back. “You should try and get some rest too. You’ve had a crazy few days I bet with everything.”

But I get being stuck in your own head, I promise.” He gave Remus a lopsided grin. “I’ll just have to keep reminding you how great you are until you believe me.”
Tumblr media
siriuslyitssirius‌:
Sirius felt the same twist in his gut he’d felt the night of the party when Remus had first admitted he had feelings for someone, but he didn’t say any more about it just then. He’d find out who Moony liked one way or another, and then he’d be able to make sure this guy was good enough for his best friend. (Would he ever think anyone was good enough for Remus?)
Yeah, that was the plan. He’d get the bloke’s name and once he knew who it was, he wouldn’t feel like an invisible lion was clawing at his insides every time Remus or anyone else brought it up.
There was a more immediate problem to tackle, anyway; Remus said he was having trouble sleeping. Sirius shifted so he was sitting on one side of the bed—the side he knew Remus usually didn’t sleep on. He pulled his t-shirt over his head and chucked it onto the floor before settling under the covers. “C’mon, then,” he said, patting the empty space beside him.
Tumblr media
Remus was pretty sure his entire being was going to combust as Sirius took his shirt off. He could feel his heart beat wildly in his chest- honestly, it was ridiculous how much he fancied Sirius. A weight he wanted to get off of his chest but if he told the other boy, he ran the risk of losing one of his best mates. Remus was so torn, wanted to tell Sirius something, anything. Another part of him wanted to protest that Sirius didn’t have to lay in bed with him but the thought of being alone made his chest feel tight. It was a lose lose situation really.
“As long as you’re sure.” Remus replied softly, keeping his shirt on, he made his way under the covers as well. Fighting against the urge to curl up against Sirius. He was quite for a long time as he laid there next to Sirius and he could feel his phone vibrate every now and then with an email alert. Each one making his stomach clench, making a chill run down his spine. How could he tell Sirius about Greyback emailing him? He hated keeping things from the other boy, hated that he had so many secrets that he kept buried down inside.
But he ignored all of them, focusing on Sirius who was laying so close to him. All he had to do was close the small space between them and cuddle against Sirius. And well, with the way he was feeling, he could squash his crush for a second. He needed the comfort that Sirius brought him and Remus wouldn’t let his school boy crush get in the way of that. So Remus scooted over, pressing himself close against Sirius. “I’ve missed this.” He muttered, “ I’m sorry I’ve been so off lately. I really do promise that I’m okay.”
