John Lennon during the filming of How I Won the War in Almería, Spain | 1966
"I feel I want to be them all - painter, writer, actor, singer, player, musician. I want to try them all and I'm lucky enough to be able to. I want to see which one turns me on. This is for me, this film, because apart from wanting to do it because of what it stands for, I want to see what I'll be like when I've done it." ~ John Lennon

A letter from John Lennon to Ronald Lacey, fellow actor on How I Won The War, written circa September 1966 on location in Almeria, Spain, explaining his absence at Lacey's leaving party.
Dear Ronnie,
I just thought this note might help explain my absence better than any “managers”. The fact is I’m just plain ‘knackered’—and I really couldn’t make the ‘smiling scene’ so to speak. I think I know you well enough now for you not to take it personally—right? It’s just John saying to Ron—I’m too tired for fun (it rhymes—hem). In case I don’t see you before you go I’ll say goodbye in this note—now. “Goodbye Ron from John—I enjoyed your company and found your ‘soul’ was quite in line with mine. I really hope we meet again sometime—lots of luck with your T.V. play in England—give my love to your family—have a good journey—keep the home fires burning—down with the Queen—bring back the dog—ban the bomb—give Wales to the Scots, and so on.
Lots of love
from a tired old soldier
with 2.30.
John.
P.S. We’re all going around in circles.
