We, SJIT GLUG members hereby say with pride that we were part of the great occasion – The General Council Meeting and National camp. It took place in Yuvakshetra Institute of Management Studies, Palakkad organized by DAKF under guidance of Free Software Movement of India (FSMI). We were grateful to have invited by Free Software Foundation TamilNadu(FSFTN). It was an amazing experience.
The three day camp was organised well with conferences, workshops, discussions, fun-activities as well as delicious Food.
The first day had two sessions. Mr. Prabir Purkayastha, Founder Editor of Newsclick.com started the day with his wisdomic style of speech about unfair rise of tech-giants like Facebook and Google. He clearly stated how the rise of tech-companies differ from giant financial and material industries. The next session was about Shared Economy and Platform monopolies by Mr.Kiran. It further explained the effect of Monopolies in the Economy and the purpose to combat them through Platform cooperatives. The day ended with fantastic classical dances such as Bharathanatyam, Kuchipudi, Mogini Attam, etc.
For the first session of second day, Mr.Prashanth delivered a motivating speech explaining the aim and objective of the Freedom Movement in India and the structure of the organisation and its member state-organisation. Mr.Sidharth from Swecha gave a lecture about The Political Education in the Organisation. It was a brief step-by-step to motivate volunteers to work for the auspicious goal. The day ended with the event ‘Campfire’ and many fun games.
Final day also had two sessions. The first session was about the “Impact of Social Media in Elections” by Mr.Bhuvan. Further session by Mr.Praveen explained what as a free software movement we can do to protect democracy. We decided to post about Fake news and collected Data using an app called Kobo Collect. At the end of the session, We decided to focus on the awareness campaign to inform the people about the unfair use of technology which would destroy democracy in the coming days.
All in actuality, the entire camp was very informative and also motivating us to take a step-up in responsibility to work against serious issues happening in the technology. Overall, the camp came out much better than we expected.

GLUG Inauguration for the Academic year 2017 - 18
Today's the SJIT GNU / Linux User's group was officially inaugurated for the Batch of 2016. The gathering was welcomed and heartfelt gratitute was conveyed to the Management, Staff and Students who had made such a venture possible We had among us Mr. Prasanth, Vice-President of FSFTN who intrigued the crowd by exporing the current trends of technology and how things work in today's digital world. He revealed to us the responsibilities that all of us have as Software Engineers in this century of rapid technology advancement. Learning by being taught is good. But Learning by doing is even better. And what better way to learn than learning in a community. This concept of learning in a community was introduced and the world's largest software community for learning and contributing i.e. the free software community was introduced to the students. Mr. Prashanth showed us the opportunites avalilable to us in this community and left all of us in awe. Our very own Amul baby, Survesh Jones followed up with how we can involve ourselves in this community and he shared his experiences as a part of the SJIT GLUG back in his student days. Syed Moinudeen 'periya thala' of the SJIT GLUG right from it's early days shared with us the history of the GLUG and how such a community came into the college. He also shared how the experiences in the club helped him grow as a member of the FOSS Community.Giving back to the community was stressed on and we were very happy that we has our seniors and founding fathers of the GLUG, Syed and Survesh with us today. The plans and course of action of the GLUG was discussed and we wound up on a happy note hoping to meet everyone again soon :)

SJIT GLUG MEET(02-03-2017)
It was a great experience at today’s Glug meet!!! We spread awareness about what centralized social networks do and how it invades our privacy. We introduced decentralized networks such as Matrix and Diaspora to the students and showed them how they followed the principle, "Power to the people"
As a part of this session we introduced the migration of all communications to the Matrix network. We introduced the Riot client application and requested everyone to migrate.
The address to the room is sjitglug:matrix.org See ya there
By HARSHAPRIYA IT(3rd yr)
The next session was on the design track :D One of our highly skilled graphic designers, Abishek took up the session with the help of Bala. The session was so interesting that the python developers themselves got engrossed in the designing process. Stress was made on how SVG images could be designed from scratch and thus image resolution will never be a problem again.

SJIT GLUG IN 4Ccon
The SJIT GLUG members hereby say with pride that we were a part of this great occasion, The National conference of Free Software Movement India. It was conducted in BS Abdur Rahman University from the 26th - 28th of January. Our GLUG members played important roles as volunteers at the event that involved participants and delegates from all over the country. Speakers like Ms. Franseca Bria - CTO of Barcelona city council, Mr. Neville Roy Singham - CEO of Thoughtworks and Evegny Morozov - Author of The Net Delusion:The Dark Side of Internet Freedom really moved the crowd with their inspiring speeches.
The themes for the conference included:
Software: Coding Freedom
Governance: The Digital Turn
Networks: Ending Discrimination
Commons: Opening up Knowledge
Contribution: Thinking Beyond Code
Gender: Diversity & Inclusion
Community: Secrets of Success
On the first day, there were 27 workshops which were very fruitful to those who attended them.
The second and third days had several speakers who expressed their views on topics such as Demonetisation and Digitalisation.
All in all, the main aim of every speaker was to let the audience know that we are always being tracked and our information is being used without our consent. This comes down to the reason why we opt for FOSS alternatives.
Not to forget the gala hour to start the second day off by EVAM troupe.
It was a great experience for our GLUG members as they met people from various backgrounds and had a chance to enhance their knowledge as well.

There was an interesting thing where we had installed a GNU/Linux OS by ourselves which was undertaken by Miss. Raji who is a part of FSFTN and many volunteers helped all around.
Day 2: We have so much interest towards web designing and frameworks and Miss. Harthi and Miss. Karthiga initiated the mission of our dream with source of HTML, CSS and JavaScript and gave a lot of useful information regarding paper presentation and websites as well.
Day 3 : Unlike a class with staffs and students, they taught as though we were their friends, in a informal manner with clear explanation about one of the programming languages, Python. This session was undertaken by Miss.Thejal and Miss.Shreya, students of AU.
Many volunteers Delfina, Ashwini and others helped us learn something new and interesting. It was glad that People from many districts are being  part of SWIFT and FSFTN. Miss. Srravya, one of the main initiatives of this SWIFT camp made to feel awesome with her inspiring speech about their works. The team made everyone to think in a different manner where everything was done in a creative manner especially the site and stickers too.
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. It takes great deal of courage to stand up to your enemies but even more to stand up to your friends.”

Software Freedom Day 2016
Hey guys!! On the 24th of September, we celebrated our very own Independence day! You're curious right? It's called Software Freedom day! SFD is celebrated all over the world during the month of September every year to spread awareness about FREE SOFTWARE (Free as in freedom, of course). After the cycle test scheduled for the day we found our way to Anna University, where the event was being organized courtesy of CEGLUG!
Tumblr media
We reached there by 10.30 and headed towards the auditorium. Heads turned as the SJIT GLUG army marched in with our 32 soldiers! We filled the seats and the event was ready to begin! The event started off with a bang as Mr. Krupa Sivakumaran blew our minds with the "UNIX" way of programming! It was so cool. He was followed by Mr. Sibi Kanagaraj, Secretary of FSFTN with his talk on Knowledge Commons! Time to set up our Stalls! Each team had chosen a particular FOSS and set up a stall on it! They demonstrated their software to the students, teachers and tech geeks who attended the event! The participants also went around and had a look at what the other students had done! The most important thing was that all of us learnt a lot of things while we surfed around for differnet kinds of FOSS and everyone gave their 100%! Mission Accomplished! Lunch Time!!! The CEG canteen was a delight and it kept the participants occupied for quite a while before the event resumed! After a hearty meal we headed back to the Ada Lovelace Auditorium for a few more enlightning talks on Internet Privacy, Openstack, FOSSonomics and Rust! Finally, Mr. Yogesh made sure that we all switched to FOSS by telling us how Free Software gives us the Freedom we deserve! He was like the leader of the army giving his pre battle talk! All is well that ends well! The event ended with the prize distribution and we congratulate Irshed and Shawn Sanjog for their prize-winning stall on Blender! We clicked a group picture and headed home! Until next year then!

This Installation fest was the first GLUG meetup for the batch of 2015(Current 2nd years). It  was held on 19/08/2016 at the premises of St.Joseph's Institute of technology between 3-5 pm IST.
The participants were invited on the basis of only one criterion - interest.
The participants where asked to bring a formatted pendrive. The Pendrives collected from the participants were made bootable with Ubuntu 16.04. The number of participants we expected were 50 but actually around 80 people turned up for the event!
YAY! Ain’t that Cool!?
The session was handled by Vijay Chandar (final year CSE). Volunteers and participants from CSE and IT were present to help the participants.
Initially there were a few problems in booting up the laptops. But we managed to figure it out and help out those who were stuck. On the whole the meet was a success! The second year folks were thrilled to be a part of the event, as it was their first meetup at SJIT GLUG!
The meet concluded by 4:35 p.m. And we proceeded to have the yummy snacks provided by college! :-D

Python Days - Day 1 (16th February 2016) Topic : Basics of Python Speaker : Aswin Fsftn Volunteer
The first day of the Python Days began with a stage whooping crowd eager to learn hell a lot about Python. The language being easy and fun to use made the Glug Bugs gleam with utmost coding fever. Many were eagerly testing out the commands they were introduced to and tried out many new things that day. The topics covered being less made the participants of the session a bit sad. The session went into Slomo when they hit Lists and the various things that you can do with that. But rather than just showing stuff on the screen with less time, the speaker gave us a fully hands on session as promised smile emoticon . And with that the session ended peacefully with mouthful of puff-pastry.
Everyone are waiting to learn a lot in the next session..(I hope the session wont be too fast because of that and we get hands on goody good coding there!!)
