I listened to Toby Morse’s podcast interview with Steve Caballero today. It’s an excellent listen and well recommended. Stevie talked about lots of things, including cassettes, and I’ve kept this one close throughout the years so I put it in today. The perfect season! Two songs with Stevie singing and playing guitar and bass, and his friend Marc Gonzalez playing drums and keyboards. At this point I was starting to realize that Steve was one of those guys who is good at whatever he does. The photo is by our friend Bryan Temmermand and i remember seeing this and being so bummed that Stevie had asked Bryan to shoot it and not me. Which was ridiculous, since I was living in San Diego and only in SJ once a month. Completely stupid and typically immature of me during those years. Rich Jacobs is many things that I admire, including kind, gentle, calm, curious, and intelligent. Yet the thing that I always realize about my friend Rich is just how generous he is. Skateboarding legend Gabriel Rodriguez died on Friday from complications of colon cancer. Nobody really wants to talk about the unpleasant subjects, especially ones having to do with our butts. If we’re keeping it real (isn’t that what the realest dudes are always trying to do?) then things like getting scoped are just another phase of reality. The good news is that nobody really needs to talk about it. Just do it. Just go deal with a few hours of unpleasantness once a year to make sure that you’re here for a long time, to skate and live for those who can’t. 🛹 Gabriel was a wizard on a skateboard. Ban This was the official signal that a new era was upon us, and Gabriel was instrumental in sending that signal. It’s difficult to put into words how much impact Willy Santos truly had on the evolution of modern street skateboarding in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was constantly and quietly pushing the limits of what could be done, as well as what could be done well, and consistently. I know that skaters from that era have the utmost respect for Willy but it seems his quiet demeanor and polite mannerisms didn’t always fuel the spotlight. And he’s never shown that he cared.
