Initially, Jet wanted to sell the videotape to compensate for the C.O.D. charges he had to pay. But once they saw that a younger version of Faye was in the tape, they wanted to find out what's inside even going so far as to travel a treacherous journey for it. And the look on their faces upon realizing how behind her manipulative and selfish persona was this vulnerable and optimistic 12-year old girl.
They act annoyed whenever she's around and wish that she'd be gone for good but ultimately they keep letting her back in because they sympathize with her loneliness; they understand she's a vagabond because they intuitive know she got a sad story that led her to the kind of life she's living just like they are even if she never explicitly mentioned it in their first meeting.
The existentialist writer Jean-Paul Sartre said in his play No Exit that "Hell is other people," but for the existential anime Cowboy Bebop, other people is their sense of relief in a lonely world that despite its highly technological advancement, has failed to satisfy the age-old longings of the human heart.
I have to believe in a world outside my own mind. I have to believe that my actions still have meaning, even if I can't remember them. I have to believe that when my eyes are closed, the world's still there. Do I believe the world's still there? Is it still out there? Yeah. We all need mirrors to remind ourselves who we are. I'm no different.
10 or so years ago I used to browse the melancholic animestills facebook pages. Turns out some of those stills are screenshots of this manga. It feels quite odd when an image that left such vague emotions in you is suddenly traced back to it's source.
I'm very curious to read this and stare at the artwork. We'll see what feelings it'll invoke in me. Thank you art, for making me feel such special feelings.
