Caine said in Episode 1 that the only thing he can't control is their minds...BUT IN EPISODE 6 he inserted the instructions of the Gun Trust Exercise...directly into Jax's mind....

TADC Episode 6 (SPOILERS) Part 1

I FIGURED IT OUT! Ribbit WAS Jax's friend, but Ribbit began to struggle in the circus and change fundamentally as a person. Ribbit completely changed and hurt Jax SO deeply (physically? emotionally? both?) that he's not just scared about caring about people; he's scared of what they'd do when/if they began the abstraction process! He's trying to simplify everything in the circus because complex dynamics, feelings, and experiences are difficult and scary. Very interesting! Abstraction has appeared as a very sudden thing...until you look at the fact that Gangle was behaving in a REALLY scary way (including LITERALLY torturing Jax) before almost abstracting in episode 5. We never saw how Kaufmo changed, only the crazed writings, but we can assume it wasn't a sudden shift. Jax may have pushed Ribbit into abstracting because Ribbit was no longer Jax's friend, and was hurting him.

You don't just one day lose your mind and snap, it builds and you begin to hurt the people around you without realizing it.

EDIT: HOLY MOLEY THERE'S MORE-

Jax has cast all the people as literal characters and I just realized what this means. He just admitted it in this episode and there's evidence + assumptions we can make based on them that interests me! In no particular order =

-Episode 2, Jax says "Aren't you supposed to be submissive and agreeable?" to Gangle. Everyone was like ??? with why he said that: Jax grew angry/confused when Gangle showed something that wasn't the one-dimensional label he has for her in his head. It's also why he "likes her more when she's sad". IT IS ALSO EXACTLY why he breaks her comedy mask on purpose. Dealing with the "sad" version of Gangle is more simple for him.

I BET HE AVOIDS KINGER in any dark areas because Kinger is more sane there; which goes against the "Crazy" label.

He tried giving Pomni a label in an attempt to HELP HER (and himself) because he doesn't know what "simple" character she fits in as.

Ragatha is the cheerful one because she wants everyone to like her, and Jax plays on this because she's easy to deal with or distract from getting complicated because she's putting on an act as well.

We all know why Zooble is the grumpy one...Jax can mess with her easily enough because Zooble doesn't like him.
