King of the Hill Pitch

King of the Hill had to be pitched to network executives before it could be made, like most tv shows, so this reel was produced to give executives a taste of what the series is about. The description says it was produced in 1996 and the first season of King of the Hill premiered in 1997. I've been looking into the production company Heart of Texas productions inc. so I will post more about them in future! But this is an interesting bit of KOTH history, as we can see the basics of the characters' personalities and designs have been here since the beginning. Bobby, Luanne, and Bill's voices seem off here (Bobby and Luanne are especially notable for having distinctly different voice actors, but I haven't found anything about who exactly voiced them). Small facts are obviously different here than they end up being in the series, like Bill's hair being trimmed by a weed whacker despite being a barber and Hank using blood dough balls for fishing (he tried them but they aren't as good as worm bait!). The designs are also slightly different, namely Hank's head being a completely different shape. Peggy's clothing is also very different from what she ends up wearing in the series, as here she is in a dress instead of her trademark tank top and shorts. The pitch aspect of it is probably the most interesting, as we see exactly what the people behind it thought the selling points of the show were. Luanne being appealing to look at (and Hank openly stating it) seem off from where the character ends up, as she becomes a more developed character in the series who has draws beyond her looks and actually becomes one of the most complex characters (as well as one of the few who has a defined character arc with continuity shifts in the series). Mostly they are selling the down-to-earth-ness of the series and showcase the mundaneness of day to day life. It's realistic, sometimes painfully so, and that's really shown off here. The heart of the show is definitely present, even from its earliest footage!
