Tumblr’s Take on Taylor

Okay, so now that I’ve seen that stupid Taylor Swift post on my dash about five times already, I’m just going to go ahead write my own piece on the topic.

I love how you guys are so eager to find any little “mistake” a person makes, without even doing slightest bit of research on the topic. You all want to believe the worst in Taylor and take a shitty Tumblr text post as fact, so I doubt you’ll read my post in its entirety, but I’m going to try anyway.

If you’ll just click on it and read the title of the article, you’ll see that it’s Taylor’s lawyers who brought up this issue with her old guitar teacher, not Taylor herself. Do you really think that she has the time to sit at home on the computer, looking for any and all things that mentions her name, just to send them C&D letters?

She hired a team of lawyers to protect her brand and identity, which is something any logical and influential person would want to do. What if her old guitar teacher one day decided to post sexist/racist remarks on itaughttaylorswift.com? What if, because of the fact that her entire name is present in the website URL, people think that Taylor endorses that kind of thinking? The lawyers took preventative action that would protect Taylor from possible backlash, because there are people like the ones on this website who would believe anything they’re told.

Now, let’s address the fact that she had people pull their items off of Etsy. Here is an article on it:

If you would look past that sensationalized title and down to where the actual article is, you’ll find that -gasp- Taylor has several phrases from her song lyrics trademarked under her name. This Bloomberg article tells us that she plans on creating her own line of goods using her song lyrics. Whether or not you agree with her trademarking her song lyrics is up to you, but that’s not what we’re discussing, we’re discussing the fact that her lawyers asked Etsy sellers to take down products containing her song lyrics.

Well, if you knew anything about trademarks, you would know that you need permission from the person holding the trademark in order to use it. Taylor’s lawyers are defending her trademark, because that’s what they’re paid to do. They are paid to protect her brand and image. You probably know that McDonald’s trademarked the phrase “I’m Lovin’ It”, and the name “McDonald’s” right? Do you have any clue how much they spend each year on lawyers in order to protect their brand? It’s probably more than you and I will ever make in our lifetimes, but do I hear you guys complaining about that? No.

Even Etsy is supporting the actions taken by Taylor’s team. Here’s a quote provided by Etsy regarding this issue:

“When a seller opens a shop and lists an item on Etsy, they are agreeing to our terms of use, including trademark guidelines, and copyright and IP policy. When we are notified about allegedly infringing material, we act swiftly and in compliance with our policy which you can find here.”

The people who listed Taylor Swift themed items not only opened themselves up to litigation under trademark laws, but they also infringed on Etsy’s terms of use. Taylor’s team did not ask for a percent of their previous sales, which they could easily have done, all they wanted was for them to take down the items that contained specific trademarked lyrics in them. If you really are so against trademark battles, take it up with US law makers, not Taylor.

NOW, let’s talk about Apple Music and streaming services. If you had even a little bit of skill with Google, you can easily find that streaming services like Spotify have been underpaying the artists whose music are available on their service. Sometimes, artists don’t get paid at all for their music. It was reported somewhere that Taylor was being compensated over $500,000 a year for having her music on Spotify. I don’t know about you, but 500k is a lot of money, and Taylor could easily have kept her music available on Spotify to continue receiving massive cheques. Instead, she pulled off her entire repertoire in protest of Spotify taking advantage of their artists, not for her own gain, but to speak up for the music community.

She just recently did the same thing with Apple Music, because it was the same exact issue; artists not being paid for their work. If you read the open letter she penned, you’ll see her explaining her reasoning for her decision.

“This is not about me. Thankfully I am on my fifth album and can support myself, my band, crew, and entire management team by playing live shows. This is about the new artist or band that has just released their first single and will not be paid for its success. This is about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt. “

“Three months is a long time to go unpaid, and it is unfair to ask anyone to work for nothing.“

“We don’t ask you for free iPhones. Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation.”

It’s perfectly clear that she understands she’s being paid enough, and that she’s alright with forgoing the money she’d earn from Apple Music in order to stand up for the little guys. If you ask any up and coming musicians, I doubt any of them would oppose the stance that Taylor has taken on music streaming. They can’t speak up because their voice is too small to be heard, but Taylor has a big voice, she’s a huge player in the music industry, and her having the guts to speak up about the issue of under compensation for artists is an admirable thing, especially since she’s standing up to one of the biggest tech companies in the world.

I hope that those of you who are reblogging that text post bashing Taylor can read this and realize that the words of some internet stranger is not gospel. Think for yourselves and do your own research instead of just bandwagoning on the opinions of others. I know that on Tumblr, it’s popular to hate on popular people, but the way you guys spin a positive thing into something problematic is ridiculous.

i’m not gonna be mad or angry at taylor or anything for this i just want answers to all of this because it’s a lot bigger and complicated than we think and i wanna know why taylors team or whatever has been so damn protective of her music, to cancelling the livestream to tour videos being taken down. i wanna know the exact reason behind all of this so i can chill and completely understand why they’re doing this, whoever “they” are

My mom was diagnosed breast cancer two years ago. Her battle was a nightmare bc she cant handle chemo therapy and cant eat well :( but the good news is she’s doing really great right now! she’s healthy and already have hair ;) I know Andrea we’ll get through this :) <3

My Story:

My grandmother suffered from lung cancer from second hand smoke, my grandfather suffered from lung cancer due to his smoking. Both have passed away now, but they had an amazing fight/life. My dad’s younger sister had breast cancer but now she’s alive, rejuvenated, healthy and happy as ever. My dad’s oldest sister had ovary cancer and survived, she’s the best relative I have and my personal Andrea. She’s alive, healthy and happy.
