the difference between the way katniss treats wounded peeta in the 74th games and the quell shows how her feelings and care for him crept up on her.

this girl was rolling her eyes in her first games because her bulky-wrestler-bod district partner could not scale a tree to sleep for the night (thg, 322). and whose loud footsteps were scaring off the animals for her to hunt (thg, 314).

but in the second games, she is all softness. she intentionally stops their group to take a break because she looks back and see the amount of sweat accumulating on peeta's forehead (cf, 81). and returns from her hunt only at the thought that peeta might be worried about her, no longer considering him a pesky tether that keeps her from wandering too far like in the first games (cf, 82; thg, 316).

and she is often comparing peeta to gale in the 74th games because of the former's lack of survival skills. and she can't help herself from wishing it was gale there with her (thg, 296; 314). but gale does not come up during the quell as a comparison to peeta.

and perhaps that is because her goal has shifted from her survival to peeta's survival (cf, 54).

or maybe it is because little by little, from the moment peeta threw the bread until she declared her love for him on the beach, her fondness of peeta has grown (thg, 30; cf, 100). little by little. until he is the only person she would want to be with her (cf, 60).

she just wants him. loud footsteps and all.
