OOC: Jokes aside, it is my plan to try and get things done this week. Or, at the very least, put the intention out there since I'll be out of the country from Thursday to Sunday and instead work on things on the other side of that trip.

I've been trying to decide how to announce I'm cautiously switching from 'hiatus' to 'low activity', and then @thesundowncrew posted this DTIYS for Nightshade! It was perfect! Except that I was out of town at the time, so I've had to wait for half a week to try and get this done.

I also decided to be smart and use a different brand of colouring pencils for this, which meant my normal shading tactics went out the window. Still, I had to celebrate the precious little lady and how far they've all come since I first met Samhain and Co!

So Jack, what's the plan for the future? Do you intend to retire once Benjamin is old enough to be Pumpkin King? Would you even want to retire? ((We are both on hiatus but I'm going through old stuff with you and Amy and am NOSTALGIC so I hope I can pop this in. 🥲))

"Well.... It isn't quite that simple. Just because someone 'comes of age', as humans might say, it doesn't necessarily mean they are ready for particular things. Milestones are not necessarily achieved simply by waiting a certain amount of time. Taking on a role such as the Pumpkin King isn't one that is simply ceremonial. Had that been the case, I would have been able to pursue other interests in... A time gone past."

"Not only that, you need to take Benjamin's experiences into consideration. He spent his entire childhood in captivity, raised to believe a series of falsehoods, and ill-equipped to deal with matters that ghouls in Hallowe'en Town would consider 'every day matters'. Leaving him alone to run not just a 'town', but an entire Holiday, would hardly be the right thing to do if he himself is not sufficiently trained nor have the confidence to do so alone.

I am a being immortal. It isn't as though I am under a time limit to 'retire', as you say. On the other hand, due to the matters surrounding Benjamin's birth, I suspect his time in the physical realm will be... a little more limited than mine is. After holding this title for centuries, I don't mind waiting a few more years. I would rather pass it on to someone who feels they are 'ready' rather than force it upon them. He needs time to study and master the skills of how things are run.

It may happen, one day, but he needs time first."

"Besides, I wouldn't be 'retiring' at all. Though I wouldn't be Pumpkin King, I still do have duties to keep malevolent spirits in check."

Thorn’s immediate answer was met with a bemused expression with one raised eyesocket. Then Storm’s response had it shift to a more confused expression, only for it to finally return to something more neutral through a sigh.

“I do not mind the artistic endeavours, you two know that... But did you really have to place them so low down? Boys, these are a tripping hazard to our visually impaired ghouls, as well as though who are too tall to see them.” Yes, Jack did stumble over them numerous times while trying to approach the pair. “Can we at least place your handiwork somewhere higher?”

Oh phew. The last thing Jack wanted was Oogie to be genuinely hurt in this moment. Now that they were on the same page, he could step back and put both hands on his hips.

“Of course I can beat you. How many of our encounters have resulted in your victory? It isn’t as though the hundreds of bugs that make you can conjure enough wit to outsmart me!”
