Red Banshee Introduction
Tumblr media
I do not remember how it started, I just remember that my brother called me at 2 A.M. saying, "Lucas, we found her". Today I can’t manage to believe it, we finally found her, and we called her "The Red Banshee". But before I tell you who we are talking about, I probably should introduce myself. Hi, my name is Lucas, and I am a Canadian researcher. Yeah Canadian, born in Montréal, the city of Jazz and ice hockey. But I actually do something else; I have been studying species and evolution for years. And it is precisely in this regard that I became interested in the so-called "red fairy". But let's take a few steps back and fly to Russia. In the early 2000s there were many testimonies about a "girl" with delicate features, red hair and eyes so blue that they would make fall in love even the vilest of the antagonists of any novel or horror film. She was seen only and exclusively at night, especially on rainy nights and some testimonies told me that she even saved a little girl from a burning building, but nobody ever saw her closely or managed to photograph or even interact with her, they only described her as the most beautiful girl they had ever seen. It is also true that we are talking about the beginnings of the 2000s, taking pictures at the time was not as easy as today, maybe that's why some fool had some fun telling us this beautiful but fake story, but I have to admit, it intrigued me a lot. Years ago I went to Norilsk, the “home” of this mythological creature who used to roam around the streets of this fantastic citadel, and I tried to gather the testimonies of the older ones, maybe they knew a few things more. They described the fairy as the most beautiful girl in the world, and we all know, the Russians do not get impressed that easily. But I continued to listen to them, I liked to let myself be intrigued by the stories maybe even a little fantasy even though I hardly believed in it, but the chances that all this was true, were low, perhaps too much. Maybe the most interesting story was been told to me by Alexandra, a dear friend of mine. Alexandra and I met in Seattle long time ago, where she studied. She knew about me by reading one of my journal articles written in the early 2000s, at the time my head traveled a lot, but as I said, I liked to collect testimonies. So I left my address if anyone had ever wanted to come forward and tell me about this wonderful legendary creature. I have to admit, for years I hoped that that old phone left there to get dust would ring, even if only for a false news, would have made me beat my heart a little bit. One day, however, it really rang. Needless to hide the emotion, I immediately went to answer. A girl answers me with a voice so docile and delicate that I immediately fell in love with it. “Hello? Mr. Camilleri?” She said, “My name is Alexandra and I would like to tell you an anecdote”, I immediately understood and I asked her for an address. I decided, let’s go to Seattle! As soon as I met her, my heart went crazy; she was identical to how the Russian inhabitants described the famous "red fairy"! But this girl could have never make fun of me, how could she ever know that the "red fairy" looked so much like her? Is she the "red fairy" then? After a light handshake and two kisses on the cheek, I suggested her to sit at some local bar, just to talk more comfortably. When she showed me an ID, a part of me struggled to believe what he saw, the girl was born in Norilsk. There were no doubts, it was her. Alexandra told me everything and told how she lost her sister Lisa when she was only three years old, she did not tell me how her sister left, and she only said that she disappeared at the age of two, but she could have sworn that nobody ever knew anything. And Alexandra herself said that she learned about the disappearance of her younger sister only several years later, and that until then she believed she was an only child. So I remained skeptical, how could the inhabitants of that beautiful town know Lisa if she disappeared at only two years old and nobody or almost ever knew what happened? Alexandra lived with this weigh on her conscience since she heard of Lisa's disappearance, but never knew that her, now former, fellow citizens knew her. We decided to investigate together. Although we liked very much the idea of playing the small detectives, we had to make it clear that it was useless to continue any investigation having practically zero evidences, only old stories which were a quarter of a century old, of people who maybe, are not even here anymore... We would’ve never discovered the truth, and I never saw Alexandra since. Until, on a cold December night, my phone rang. I must be honest, I hardly ever answer the night calls, but it was my brother. And when it's not about money, it's rare for him to call me, but I still answered the call. I remember that he answered with a very excited voice and stammered to me: “Lucas, we found her!”, “We found the girl you were looking for in your stories for years”, he told me. There was no time to waste, he was talking about Lisa! I got ready, and took the first plane to Russia; I had to get there in a hurry. They gave me the address of a chalet far from the town and unreachable by public transports, so I decided to rent an old car and embark on the journey. Finally arrived almost at destination, me and my car that was barely running stopped some miles away since it was impossible to continue with the car, but I saw in the distance the chalet they told me about. On my arrival, however, the scene was surreal...
