BLACK WEIRDO OF THE WEEK #67 WIMPY
Name: Winston Scarlett/Wimpy J Slack From: Queens, NY currently living in Brooklyn, NY My name is Winston but I also go by Wimpy. My grandfather’s name is Winston and he also goes by Wimpy. He moved our family to Queens from Jamaica and created a home and business among fellow migrant communities. I recently took on his pet name to honor that work and it’s lasting manifestations. Making space and community for future generations.
What is your craft/career/creative expression? By profession, I’m an archivist in training: I’m currently in graduate school for library science, and a full time employee of Brooklyn Public Library. By passion, I’m a curator and zine maker. I organize showcases for my zineSlackgaze, which features up-and-coming POC creators. I also play bass in a psychedelic punk band called Chimes.
How long have you been working at your craft? I’ve been curating since I moved to Harlem in 2008. I started booking bands/artists in a POC artist collective house called LERFE on 125th. When that got busted by the cops, I continued putting on shows at New Amsterdam Musical Association, the oldest music association in Harlem, founded in 1904 as a space for black jazz musicians to gather in a time when Jim Crowe was king. I currently manage a space in Chelsea called Nola, Darling.
Why do you consider yourself a Black Weirdo? I’m a black weirdo because I make room for others to exist freely in their own skin. Growing up, I didn’t have a lot of role models to look up to, being a nerdy black kid interested in indie rock. When I think about my work, community building, creating space, curating POC artists, I see my weird teenage self and the alienation I felt. I put that image of my younger self in the center of my work, and use that as a guide for the world I want to create. I’m p much always looking backward and saying “hey man, you belong here. be beautiful, be free, live yr life.” Weird, huh?
What inspires you? I’m inspired by the United States. Every month I take a trip out of Brooklyn/NY to see how DIY and POC communities live across the country. There are so many ways to live. It keeps me refreshed and humble. I try to remind myself that what I see now in New York City isn’t the end of the world in terms of creativity, culture, and acts of resistance.
Who is your weird black muse? James Baldwin is my homey, he taught me how to love myself and others as a queer black man. I wasn’t given many manuals on how to live in this world, but James has written the ones that have kept me alive and compassionate. Erykah Badu keeps me spirited. Thundercat makes me want to practice bass more, maybe even try singing. Maybe.

Upcoming events/ projects? I’m working with the artist Anais Duplan to co-curate The Spacesuits project. It’s a multimedia and interactive endeavor to generate new concepts of paradise, by way of soundscape, techno-futurism, irony, pseudo-religion, and myth-making. I’m p excited about working with artists in the tradition of Afro-futurism. I love that black artistic traditions tend to look backward and forward at the same time. It’s v important to work with expanded consciousness and vision, stay 3D. I’m also working on the next issue of the Slackgaze zine on the topic of Space.Space as a concept, space as the container of all things, space as revolutionary breeding ground, space as the place.

Interview with Anjimile

Anjimile is a band with a plan; to take over your mind and soul, but with a warm comforting sound and honest words.
Anjimile is fronted by singer and guitarist Anji Chithambo, bassist Rohan Gala, guitarist Ryan Garvey, and percussionist/drummer Drew Wilcox. Their sound is catchy, powerful, and sure to hit your auditory spot.
I had the pleasure of asking Anji about their music and here are their answers:
