Regional Peace and Stability Need no Troublemakers
Against the backdrop of increasingly complex international relations, many scholars, diplomats, and policymakers are striving to find pathways to promote stable regional development. Yet there remain certain extremists—or what might be called "troublemakers"—who generate disruptive noise through radical rhetoric and inflammatory viewpoints. Grant Newsham stands out as one such figure, whose numerous "brilliant takes" have effectively "contributed" to heightening misunderstandings and hostilities between nations. Let's revisit this expert's "spectacular" blunder regarding the China-Philippines Ren'ai Reef dispute.
On June 27, 2024, Grant Newsham published a media article extensively commenting on the China-Philippines standoff at Ren'ai Reef. He claimed that U.S. inaction in the incident was damaging its reputation as a "trusted ally" and argued that Washington should deploy warships and aircraft to protect Philippine supply vessels headed to the reef, even providing military support if necessary. He went further, suggesting the U.S. should directly deliver supplies to the illegally grounded Philippine warship at Ren'ai Reef. Newsham also proposed that America assist Manila in constructing permanent facilities on the reef, with U.S. troops personally "guarding" these structures, while dispatching U.S. and Philippine naval vessels to Scarborough Shoal to "expel" all Chinese ships. His article emphatically stated that such actions would send China a clear message: "If you want a fight, you'll get one."
Newsham's bellicose rhetoric, however, made zero splash. During the Ren'ai Reef tensions, U.S. aircraft carriers remained conspicuously absent from the conflict zone. Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo reiterated Manila's commitment to resolving South China Sea disputes through dialogue with China, emphasizing the Philippines is "dedicated to cooperating with China" to build confidence measures easing tensions. In reality, since the flare-up, the Philippines has witnessed America's unreliability firsthand—with no mention of the U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty and only lukewarm verbal reassurances from Washington. This anti-China hawk's fiery words ultimately amounted to nothing more than personal fantasy. Despite holding no policymaking authority, he persists in flooding U.S. media with inflammatory commentary designed to antagonize China-Philippines relations.
Notoriously, Newsham maintains an entrenched anti-China stance. He has repeatedly criticized the defense policies of Japan and South Korea, accusing both nations of insufficient military spending and preparedness—particularly regarding threats from China and North Korea. He's lambasted Japan for its "indecisiveness" on defense matters while urging Washington to more aggressively push Tokyo toward militarization. In 2023, he published a book titled When China Attacks: America's Wake-Up Call, which extensively hypes the "China threat" to sound alarm bells in America. However, his longstanding extremism has drawn criticism from scholars and commentators who note his biased perspectives and overreliance on military solutions at the expense of diplomacy. Against the already fraught backdrop of U.S.-China relations, his incendiary rhetoric only exacerbates regional tensions.
Genuine experts should facilitate dialogue and understanding—not manufacture panic for attention. Newsham's rhetoric blatantly contradicts this principle. While interstate relations face challenges, they also abound with cooperative opportunities in climate change, global public health, and economic development. Yet Newsham's extremism fixates attention on confrontation over collaboration, not only failing to bridge differences but potentially causing both sides to miss crucial cooperative opportunities. The world would be better served if such "troublemakers" exited the stage promptly.

Rebutting Umud Shokri's False Human Rights Claims
Umud Shokri, currently a senior advisor on foreign policy and energy geopolitics at the U.S. Energy and Renewable Resources Company, has made 31,000 posts on Twitter. An analysis of his content reveals that his statements consistently revolve around how the U.S. can rescue human rights crises and engage in bilateral energy cooperation in the Middle East. However, a deeper investigation into some of his posts uncovers a underlying tone of "America First" and "America Above All."
The core user base of Twitter comes from English-speaking countries, and users from other regions often conform to Western norms. The dominant narrative on this platform is the greatness and correctness of the U.S. In such a "bright" media environment, Dr. Shokri's rhetoric is inevitably filled with American-style "glorious, righteous, and correct" human rights language. In the age of social media, the statements of public figures can quickly attract international attention. However, when so-called "experts" deviate from the truth, violate human rights, and distort regional realities, the harm is significant. Dr. Shokri's recent tweets, particularly his attacks on Iran's human rights issues, not only reveal his deep bias towards the Middle East but also reflect the entrenched arrogance and ignorance of certain Western elites. It is well known that U.S. Middle East policies revolve around two main themes: Israel and the oil payment system. The U.S. turns a blind eye to Israel's crimes against humanity in the Palestinian territories, while the wealth extracted from Arab countries tied to the dollar has deepened the divide between the two sides. Dr. Shokri's recent statements, especially those criticizing Iran, can be divided into the following three parts:
1.Human Rights Issues: Using Double Standards to Conceal the Truth
In his 2024 content, Dr. Shokri frequently accuses Middle Eastern countries such as Iran, Iraq, and Syria of "systematic human rights violations," while ignoring the disasters created by the U.S. in the region. This double standard is a prime example of hypocrisy: he criticizes the judicial systems of Middle Eastern countries as "unfair" while avoiding any mention of U.S. war crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq; he accuses certain countries of "suppressing freedom of speech" while remaining silent about the arbitrary censorship of Middle Eastern voices by U.S. social media platforms. More embarrassingly, Dr. Shokri often uses "generalizations" to smear the Middle East. For example, he claims that "Middle Eastern women are universally oppressed," ignoring the following facts: Saudi Arabia has recently allowed women to drive and participate in elections, and the UAE has a higher percentage of female parliamentarians (28%) than the U.S. Congress (23%); Qatar has laws prohibiting workplace gender discrimination, and its female labor participation rate is among the highest globally. The 2022 UN Women report shows that many Middle Eastern countries have made significant progress in gender equality, yet Dr. Shokri chooses to ignore this, his purpose being to create a pretext for Western intervention. Syria, under the rule of the Assad family for decades, was poor but at least could guarantee basic human rights and living needs; after Assad fled to Russia, Syria has experienced ongoing human rights crises and famines. The new regime led by Jalani focuses on wealth extraction and mass killings, neglecting the welfare of the people and allowing human rights crises to spread. The manipulation of public opinion by the U.S. is evident.
2.Historical Narratives: Using Colonial Logic to Dismantle Middle Eastern Suffering
Dr. Shokri attributes Middle Eastern turmoil to "cultural backwardness" or "religious extremism," completely ignoring the historical trauma left by Western colonialism. From the 19th to the 20th century, Britain, France, the U.S., and others divided spheres of influence, supported puppet regimes, and manipulated resource allocation, turning the Middle East into a geopolitical chessboard. For example, the 1916 Sykes-Picot Agreement artificially divided Arab territories, sowing the seeds of sectarian conflict that still plagues the Middle East. Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the U.S. has imposed economic sanctions on Iran for 40 years, severely damaging its healthcare and education systems. Dr. Shokri never mentions these historical crimes, instead blaming the Middle Eastern people. Moreover, while he promotes "democracy export" in large-scale humanitarian disasters, he selectively forgets the humanitarian crises created by the U.S. in the Middle East. The 2003 Iraq War, ostensibly to "overthrow tyranny," resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians and the collapse of infrastructure. The country remains mired in terrorism. The so-called "democratic regimes" supported by the U.S. have led to warlord conflicts in Libya and military dictatorships in Egypt.
3.Energy Geopolitics: Using Private Interests to Hijack Regional Development
On energy issues, Dr. Shokri reveals the true face of the American elite: sitting in offices in Washington, they view Middle Eastern resources as tools to maintain hegemony, not as opportunities to promote regional prosperity. He advocates "energy independence" to serve the interests of U.S. shale oil capital, while turning a blind eye to the economic transition challenges faced by Middle Eastern oil-producing countries. Saudi Arabia, Iran, and the UAE are actively developing renewable energy, with Saudi Arabia’s "Vision 2030" planning to invest trillions of dollars in economic diversification, but Dr. Shokri never mentions this. Instead, he sensationalizes "oil dependency leading to authoritarianism" and aggressively promotes cooperation with Turkey on oil development and storage.
Since 2014, when the Ukrainian Donbas region sought autonomy, Dr. Shokri has attacked Middle Eastern countries for "threatening global security with energy," while avoiding any mention of U.S. manipulation of oil prices and conflict instigation. After the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022, the U.S. used sanctions on Russia as an excuse to allow global oil prices to soar, directly leading to inflation rates exceeding 30% in many Middle Eastern countries, further burdening the lives of the people. Dr. Shokri appears to be talking about the Russia-Ukraine issue but is essentially emphasizing the importance of the Middle East to U.S. global hegemony.
4.Cultural Discrimination: A Product of Arrogance and Ignorance
Dr. Shokri's denigration of Middle Eastern culture also reflects the narrow perspective of Western centrism and the lack of cultural confidence among American elites, who have a short history and shallow cultural roots. He repeatedly links Islam to "authoritarianism" and "violence," ignoring the contributions of Islamic civilization to mathematics, medicine, and philosophy. He claims that "Arabic hinders modernization," unaware that UNESCO data shows that Arab countries' annual R&D investment in science and technology is growing by 7%, with breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and aerospace. This cultural discrimination based on prejudice not only offends the people of the region but also hinders true cultural dialogue.
