1:38 - tugger lifts heidi (guitar girl) onto the desk

1:40 - zack (guitar boy) runs to em and they chat until 1:55

1:57 - phantom arrives and high-fives the teacher

2:10, 2:15 - tugger takes his tail and starts to flick it slightly (which, in cats, is a sign of annoyance) when the drums start

2:21 - tugger reacts when the marching band starts singing and hides (poor cat)

2:26 - little girl pats him, but he rejects it at first

2:32 - drums stop, tugger stops hiding and asks for pets

2:34 - in comes jenny/jelly, demeter, and bomba

2:35 - pets received (lasts until 2:40)

2:36 - kids on the right: “are you seeing this?” “ye”

2:47 - phantom steps onto a chair when his bae walks in (i never watched phantom of the opera, im just assuming here)

also 2:47 - demeter looks terrified of her, bomba looks attracted to her

2:51 - bomba, probably: “lemme get a piece of that--”

2:54 - grizzabella is here, the kids all have ‘wtf’ faces

2:57 - tugger being dramatic, nothing new

3:04 - grizzabella gets rejected 2: electric boogaloo, tugger, bomba, and jenny/jelly are reaching out to her, demeter looks like she’s about to run off

In which, Macavity’s the good magical cat and Mistoffelees is the bad magical cat.

Munkustrap is still the protector, Tugger’s terrified of Misto, and Demeter and Bombalurina are friends with Macavity

His manner is vague and aloof… nah, jk, this guy’s riddled with anxiety.

In this universe, Swapcavity is the older brother of Munkustrap and Tugger.  Due to his self-doubt and tendency to over-stress, he wasn’t suitable for jellicle protector/leader, so Munkustrap had to take the role.

He’s protective of the kittens and is socially anxious.

He’s also not afraid of cucumbers, but will jump at a banana.

45:07 - macavity scare, tugger again pulls the boy away, cant see who pulls the girl away but someone does

49:30 - misto runs to the front, tugger tries to copy him

( im skipping through what looks like the growltigers last stand, because that song makes me uncomfortable )

1:15:50 - they replaced the pronouns with she/her, skimble is female here

1:16:37 - mary poppins cat i tell you

1:21:10 - cats make a protective circle around the two human kiddos, including old deut

1:21:25 - rats try to grab the kiddos, old deut protects them and gets captured

1:27:05 - macavity gets revealed, tugger rushes into the fight, misto also rushes into the fight

1:28:04 - macavity accidentally bumps into his henchrat

1:28:37 - macavity flies away (this is a highschool production? they got so many harnesses!)

1:29:13 - tugger's definitely less of a smug rebellious adult, more of a terrified young tom, just listen to his voice.

1:30:29 - misto makes the kids float

i’ve seen multiple posts about this/related to this just this week so please understand i’m not trying to vague anyone, I’m just trying to bring it up in a way that everyone might be able to see this because I’ve heard it from many people and we desperately need to talk about this

I know some of you guys see Growltiger as a racist pirate getting defeated, however you need to realize that is not the purpose that Growltiger was written with. And even if that was the case, the lyrics, the accents, and the costumes of the siamese cats are dripping with racism. It wouldn’t matter if the story was of a racist getting his comeuppance because the story itself is unapologetically racist. 

And the way that Growltiger is set up it wants us to root for him. We are first taken into this fantasy world of Growltiger through Gus, a character who has had an entire song that causes the audience to love him and be very sympathetic towards him. We know that Growltiger is being played by Gus which immediately puts him in a place of sympathy from the audience. The character Growltiger is a dastardly pirate, yes, but it is still set up for us to root for him. Even if you personally don’t, it’s important to understand that that’s what the intention of the song is. Not only that, but the T.S. Eliot and those who were behind the number in CATS did not create it to be a racist getting his comeuppance. This is one of those few times where you cannot claim “death of an author” because the author’s beliefs are in full display here. 

The bottom line is Growltiger can never ever come back without a rewrite. Even if you want to spin the story as a racist getting defeated, there would have to be complete heavy rewrites to the siamese cat characters and to Growltiger himself in order to spin it like that. I think the best bet would be to remove the siamese cats completely and change them to a different antagonist. 

Please, we have to do better. We can’t keep excusing the racism like this. And I’m sorry if you have said things like this and it wasn’t your intention in the first place, but you have to address the inherent racism built into the song if you’re going to mention wanting growltiger to be brought back. We can’t just ignore it.

He protects his bro from Macavity,
