The Frankensteinification of my Gender

There’s such a clear parallel between the gothic character i identified with in high school and the one I’m finding myself to identify with now.

In high school I fell in love with the Picture of Dorian Gray. I loved Dorian as this timeless archetype of a young man who was so beautiful and in love with his beauty he captured his essence in a painted portrait and the portrait would age and show his true hideousness instead of his body. I was a budding femboy! Part of me was convinced I would never physically transition. I was scared of it deeply. I was scared of myself. I knew this truth in my body that I was a boy but the idea of coming out to anyone outside of a small circle of friends felt impossible. I wanted to be a beautiful feminine boy seen by those around him as this beautiful unmoving ungrowing image of queer masculine femininity while how I really felt internally was hidden and expressed elsewhere on some oil painting hidden behind a curtain or in a closet.

But I couldn’t be Dorian Gray could I? Because I was- I am growing, I am moving and changing. I’ve grown. The world around me has crumbled. Part of me has physically died and has been put back together. And as I step closer to medically transitioning and transexualism I am Frankenstein, both the doctor and his monster, as I reconstruct my own body in my own image of myself. I am playing at god but I am my own god reconstructing my own fate and not some stranger, so I do it without the fear and shame of Dr. Frankenstein, but the fearlessness, power, and wisdom of the monster. I am a monster, a freak, a queer, a transexual. I will go under the scalpel to emerge with new life. One day I’ll look in the mirror and say, “it’s alive” in exclamation towards my body living it’s gender loudly with scars and stitches.

It was the monster who said “beware, for I am fearless and therefore powerful.”
