He came up through rock ranks as Guns N' Roses guitarist and second fiddle to leader Axl Rose, but this year he broke out of the box with his own band, Slash's Snakepit, a musical venue that is supposed to encapsulate his philosophy on life: Be young, have fun, jam and maintain a relentless, screaming musical frenzy. Since the release of his solo debut, It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere, media exposure has been just as relentless.

Conceived in Paris and schooled in England, Slash spent his formative years in California. He claims his famous look is nothing new. "I've looked like this since I was a little kid, always had long hair, wore jeans and T-shirts. I was a real outcast in school. Parents don't raise their kids to look like that, so I didn't get along well."

When he took up guitar, his life as a social dropout ended, he says. "For some strange reason, when I stopped trying and started playing guitar and didn't give a fuck, all of a sudden I was cool."

Known for his hearty appreciation of women, Slash says, "I play a lot more now than when I used to chase chicks around. I used to spend all my time doing that. I guess I burned out on it. I fell in love!"
