about reposting pixiv's art, i always do it, i repost them on fb and twitter, i don't ask their permission, but I've always put the artist's name and the source link. ^^

Hey anon, I’m assuming you’re sending me this because I reblogged this post and I know you probably didn’t send this to make me angry, but, well, it sort of did, because there are problems with that reasoning. 

“I always do it” and “I don’t ask their permission” should be “I always ask for permission”! There are many reasons why artists might not want their art reposted, even with sourced credit. For example, I have certain pieces that I’m not confident enough to share outside of my tumblr/twitter/pixiv, so even when people ask for permission to repost, I apologize and ask them to refrain from reposting. 

You don’t know what an artist wants unless you ask. Artists often choose their social media platforms selectively because they want to showcase their art to certain audiences. Every site has different guidelines and communities and functions differently. For example, there are many downsides to tumblr; artists often don’t get comments on their work, and reblogged art stays on blogs even if the original post is deleted (unless it’s removed by tumblr for violations) so if an artist doesn’t want their art on the web anymore, they’re screwed.

Pixiv, on the other hand, allows the artist to have more control over their works: if a piece is deleted or made private, its audience is automatically limited. Furthermore, most of the users are Japanese, which is nice for Japanese artists because, well, Japanese is their language and they can showcase their fanworks to people who actually buy their stuff.

A lot of pixiv artists have had bad experiences with reposts, especially by people with whom they can’t converse because of language barriers, and this has made many artists wary of all forms of reposting. And anyway, it’s against community guidelines to repost without permission. (See “Article 13. Prohibited Acts. Or just read the IMPORTANT at the top of the page.)

By the way, you can share art to sites like twitter directly from pixiv instead of reposting! See this?

These marks should appear to the upper left of every pixiv piece! You don’t need permission to use these buttons. You can simply tweet the link to share. “Liking” on facebook is a little different, but the concept is similar enough: you give it publicity by doing so. Alternatively, you could also just post a link.  

Links are much nicer and more respectful than reposts because they encourage people to check out the original artist’s posts and allow them to directly get credit for/get comments on what they’ve made! Which is nice and encouraging and makes artists want to make more beautiful art. Reposts, on the other hand, can make artists upset for various reasons and discourage them from sharing their works. 

Honestly, even without the ‘benefit’ of getting more lovely art, people should remember that artists are people. Fanart doesn’t just come out of nowhere. It’s the result of hard work and time spent by the artist. It takes time to draw a single piece, and it takes years of practice to learn how to draw. So please, respect an artist’s wishes. Pay them more respect than just credit; take the time to ask! If you need help asking because you don’t know how to write Japanese, check this guideline out (there are lots of helpful links)! 

To people reblogging reposted ‘sourced’ art: please check out the source link! Give the artist credit with stars or bookmarks or whatever! And make sure the artist allowed the repost! Too often I’ve seen ‘sourced’ posts, only to click the link and see the artist forbid all forms of reposting on their profile page. And that’s just disrespectful.
