three romanian authors to read with ur dracula daily

dracula is an orientalist text conceived at the height of british empire, grounded on distortions of a region that stoker never visited. sadly (and unsurprisingly) i found very few romanian authors who have been translated into english online, so here’s a meagre list of recs:

1. luminița cioabă

romanian roma author, famous in romania as the daughter of bulibasha (the king of the roma nation), she forged her own path as a writer of short stories in the oral roma tradition which portray in vivid detail the history of the roma people of romania

2. marin sorescu

from humble rural romanian roots, he wrote under the oppressive ceausescu government. in a national ironic tradition he very famously said: "Just as I can’t give up smoking because I don’t smoke, I can’t give up writing because I have no talent.“ some of my favorite poems:

3. paul celan

jewish romanian poet from bucovina. i recommend this beautiful essay by ilya kaminsky, who like celan was forced to flee eastern europe due to antisemitism, deconstructing various translators’ attempts to adapt celan’s texts and experience of the holocaust. these are all poems from a 1971 poetry collection

a lot of men say they want women to embrace their natural beauty but they really just want women who are already pretty enough without makeup to not wear makeup… like, you don’t want someone to show their natural acne and scars and natural hyper pigmentation, you don’t let women have their natural mustaches, chin hair, and unibrows without shitting on them, which is exactly how they grow for a lot of people, etc. you want women to wax and shape their natural brows, remove their natural facial hair, and do a strict skincare regimen to manipulate the chemistry and physiological processes of their skin to maintain clear unblemished skin and adhere to already existing beauty standards. you just don’t want them to wear the style of makeup you don’t like lol

so much of this fandom’s attitudes towards manon and charles (both separately and as a ship) makes me so uncomfortable. stop attacking the appearance of a genuinely sweet actor by calling him ugly & a rat just because he looks older. hot take: manon, daphne, and emma all look way too old too and y'all aren’t calling them childish names. stop calling straight characters lesbians/ lesbian icons (unless you yourself are a lesbian, then you have as much of a right to say it as anyone) and stop calling anyone who ships that straight character with a character of the opposite gender a homophobe. stop calling people homophobes because they ship marles/noorhelm since i, a lesbian who is not a homophobe, ship it. just let people like things without acting like their happiness somehow steals from yours unless they agree with you.
