In the doll episode you mentioned that Nephrite has the most bleedthrough after kinda recognising Mamoru. Do you think his hatred of Zoicite could be blame for what happened in the past? Or at least his subconscious reason.

Nephrite and Zoisite’s hatemance is something I love to watch in Classic, but I admit I’ve never spent much time figuring out the WHY of it. I’ve wondered aloud about it a few times during those liveblogs (and I’m waiting to see if something in Nephrite’s arc, as I go back through it, maybe suggests that final missing piece to me), but I’ve never settled on anything. Or, honestly, really thought about it too much beyond those moments. (I have a tendency, with the Shitennou, to enjoy them in very specific capacities when they’re in front of me, but mostly forget about them when they aren’t.)

So do I think it could be due to something in the past? Sure, it’s very possible. But an important element of Nephrite and Zoisite’s whole thing is the fact that it’s BOTH of them. Nephrite hates Zoisite, but Zoisite hates Nephrite every bit as much. More, quite possibly. (Most likely, as Zoisite does rather MURDER HIM.) So if it’s because of something remembered in the past, I think that memory has to live on in them both. Plus, we have to ask the question, Why THIS? Why, out of everything they each individually experienced in the Silver Millennium, is THIS the piece that still burns so brightly? Not Endymion, not their duty, not the Silver Millennium, not even fucking Metallia and the ginzuishou until the time is right.

Adding into that is Nephrite, or at least how I see him. Even now, when their hatred is going full steam ahead to Nephrite being punctured in a few episodes, I really think that he would be content to just privately nurse his hate like a fine wine. I think Nephrite’s hatred of Zoisite is sincere, but I think what’s brought it to that level is ZOISITE. 99% of the time we see them interacting, it’s Zoisite who starts shit. Nephrite just wants to do his job and hang with his stars. I think frankly he’d happily move to his magical forested hillside mansion and stay there forever if he could. If Zoisite let shit drop, I think Nephrite would too. Not because he forgave Zoisite or hated him any less, but because he just has other shit he’d rather do. He’s just generally not that petty.

Zoisite, of course, is COMPLETELY that petty. So while I don’t think that Nephrite would bring this thing above all else with him from the past, I think Zoisite might. Which means it’s Zoisite who has a cache of memories from the SilMil too, which of course opens an entirely new door for what he may or may not remember, as well as raises some questions about what kind of person he was in the past. (I mean a grudge against one of his brothers-in-arms that transcends time and space from when they were both, ostensibly, “good guys” is a hell of a thing.)

It’s all personal preference of course. If you like that Nephrite is the source of this from an incident in their past, then you should go with that. I think for myself though, I like one of two very broad origins for their hatred of each other:

1. Zoisite remembered something from the past and renewed it in the present. All of Nephrite’s reactions to him however are born from this new rivalry, with maybe a faint flash of memory of the past but nothing he could really substantiate (ala his flash with Mamoru). The important point is that, in this time, Zoisite started it with an ignorant Nephrite.

2. It’s all due to something recent. I have to admit that I prefer this idea, for no reason other than it’s the most simple and direct reason. And I love the thought, too, that it sprung up over something relatively inconsequential. Nephrite didn’t brew a fresh pot of coffee after taking the last one. He spelled Zoisite’s name wrong in one of his newsletters. He said Zoisite didn’t have the right hips to model his latest purple gown. Just something that should have been a minor disagreement blown up to LITERALLY murderous proportions. It’s extra funny to think of this with Kunzite being like “Meh, we can crush him whenever”. Like, FOR THE COFFEE. I dunno.

I just see Zoisite as so entirely the fuel for their thing, that it being something recent and completely overreacting on both of their parts appeals to me more than a deep and tragic feud that survived death. It just has that right element of overblown ridiculousness that I think suits them both so well.

A distant future in Crystal Tokyo. I like to think that many former villains like the Amazon Trio and the Shitennou would eventually be reborn and lead happier lives under Neo-Queen Serenity's reign.

Crossover "Sailor Moon" and "Steven Universe"!

Zoisite. It was a pleasure to combine the colors of the original stone; it turned out very spring-like. To reflect the randomness of Zoisite, I made the boots in different colors and painted a pink pattern on the cheekbones. The Zoisite gem is located just below the chest, but due to the fact that this gem constantly stands in a protective pose, it is not visible.

Kunzite. When I adapted his design, I aimed to make him translucent (if Zoisite was hiding behind him, he would be visible). The kunzite starts out bright pink but fades in the sun, which I thought was a great detail for the character. During the years he serves Endymion, he burns out, both physically and mentally. His gem is located on the forehead. When casting spells and using his dark power, Kunzite can darken, and only his eyes will glow.

Nephrite. I changed him the least, that's true. There were difficulties with him, since nephrite comes in a variety of shades, so I chose only two - green and yellow, which are the most known ones. Nephrite is dressed as Masoto Sanjoin, his favorite alter ego. The gem is located on the chest. I tried to put maximum masculine vibes into Nephrite - a high-cheekbone face, an exceptional posture, thick eyebrows and hair. And how can you not fall in love with someone like that?

Jadeite. It was difficult with him too. Firstly, the jadeite stone itself can be different, and again this is green. Secondly, Jadeite needed something special that the previous ones did not have. still chose a green color, but made it milky, bright glasses, like Peridot from SU. His gem is located in his left hand.
