having a freeze response to stress is so funny in the context of normal adult stressors. millions of years of evolution are trying to tell me that the email will not find me if i stay very still and do nothing

it's a few days post-christmas. you are in a home which hasn't been home for almost two years now (maybe it was never home to begin with) and it's 2:30am and you need to get up early to catch your train. not to your current home (if that's what it can be called) but to your other relatives' home (they would probably call it home). relatives with young kids who are already excited to have you over and draw together with you. you know you will not get enough sleep, but it is already late, you are somehow sad and alone and you miss all your friends and people not in your life anymore and that's okay but also it's not. you have an ao3 tab open in your browser and so you start reading it, thinking yes this is the last thing i will do before going to sleep. i feel awful i feel sad i feel tired but i got this little distraction. and you start reading it until you notice a bzz bzz of a fly in your room. it is approaching (bzz) it is coming closer (bzzz) and once you feel it next to your head (bzz) (bzzz) you take a swing at it. but the fly does not fly away, instead it swiftly lands on your phone screen. it does not move. you are staring at words written by some stranger about characters created by some person and now there is a creature sitting on top. rubbing its little hands as if it was saying hehe hello (bzz). let me read this too (bzz). and you start bawling you start crying because heck i am not alone we are all connected, this little fly that i tried to swat away instead just chilled on my phone and now i feel so silly. so silly (sob). (bzz). (sob). (bzz).

and so of course the fly leaves again after a while and i finish the fanfiction. it's 3am by now, i will get up in a few hours. and the fly is buzzing in the background of my room as i fall asleep.
