My new horse obsession is the dressage company Academic Art of Riding which is basically experimenting in recreating the airs above the ground with as many different training methods as possible (though of course no forceful or painful methods). They trained one horse entirely according to the notes of a horse trainer from the 1500s??
Look how integrated they make the levade look! It looks like part of a whole movement instead of just a party trick!!
youtube
Look at the insane level of collection they've achieved with some of their horses. The third pic is the first actual photo I've seen of a ballotade. I've only seen drawings and paintings of it until now???

They stopped doing extended trots because it has nothing to do with collection and its only purpose is to be flashy - despite basically perfecting the extended trot. The trot on the left? The one most of us would consider perfect?? The rider considers it poorly balanced because the horse's hindlegs are pushing too hard, causing a deeper bend in the front fetlock than is really good for a balanced trot. That's how nitpicky we're getting.
Unfortunately their book is...
...outside my price range, let's say

I hate the met galla. None of those people are important to me. My horsey is important to me.

Lesson was a SUCCESS!! We hauled out to an indoor arena (which I've never done with her before) and it went amazingly! The trainer also has an older QH gelding I can borrow for lessons when we want to focus on just my equitation and not what my greenie pony is doing too.
First lesson with a trainer on my own pony next Tuesday. I'm nervous!!
#jo talk#stevie was effectively by herself#we didnt bring any of her herdmates along and she did AMAZING#i think she maybe let out one tiny half whinny when we arrived and that's it
