shoutout to all my other polish readers and those who will be getting the new book translation soon: i think the reason for roach's name makes it a million times sillier I love it so much best part of the new book so far

I think my favorite translation-related detail in the Witcher saga that separates the original Polish version from English lies in Geralt’s horse(s), Roach

He names all of his horses “Roach,” which in English, is a very grim-sounding name. It immediately stirs the thought of a cockroach, and it sort of fits the grimy dark fantasy aesthetic that the series has going for it, as well as Geralt’s personality as someone who likes to keep things simple and uncomplicated. He gives the name to every horse he owns, further adding to that.

Meanwhile, in the original Polish version, his horse’s name is Płotka, which to my understanding is a diminutive form of płoć, which is a type of fish, known as a common roach in English, which is actually a pretty small and common fish. It being a diminutive form, it’s also basically saying “Roachie” instead of “Roach,” so all things considered, it’s meant to be a tiny, adorable, cutesy name, but that gets completely lost in the translation. It’s like naming your horse “Guppy” or something.

not finished crossroad of ravens yet but there's something about geralt constantly trying to believe in the good of people thats so important to me. like he is TRYING to do good in this world that hates it he wants to believe that people mean well . even when they lie to him or short him out on money hes willing to TRY. like clearly it has taken geralt many painful lessons to get where he is in previous books because this man is so full of LOVE and compassion even when he thinks he isn't. hes fast to trust holt, he assumes everyone he meets wants good, mostly. idk obviously theres more to him than that but to me geralt is always at his heart a caring, compassionate person who has been hurt so often by the world (and not just like emotionally but just like . short changed and taken advantage of) but he still tries. he loves his friends and yennefer and ciri and ugh idk i just have a lot of feelings
