June 17th is Global Garbage Man Day! This day honors the men and women in the waste management profession, especially those that travel down your street once a week to collect waste.

For today, Howard letterpress printed an image from a halftone of an old garbage truck. This cut is from the Frank Cowsert Collection. The text below the truck states “Global Garbage Man Day” and was typeset in 24 point Stymie Bold Condensed font. We hope Howard made a good impression for today and that this print isn’t trash. This was printed with rhodamine red rubber base ink using our Washington hand press.

Halftones were used to introduce photography in newspapers and books starting in the late 1880s. The pictures in halftones are broken into a series of equally spaced dots of varying size.
