Currently the Slide Room Gallery is undergoing a transformation, as with the rest of the Vancouver Island School of Art (where it is located). Every year in mid December the Vancouver Island School of Art hosts an Open House which showcases work created by students from this past semester. The School is absolutely FULL of art from top to bottom. The Slide Room Gallery is proud to be a part of this tradition and will be showing work from the Advanced Painting I, Advanced Drawing I, and Directed Studies students.

When walking into an exhibition it often comes as second nature when looking at the art to notice the construction of the work, and the time and care that went into the making. In a well curated show it is easy to take for granted the way the exhibition is set up, the specifics of the installation, the choice of hardware and the “flow” of the work. In fact, that is how you can tell whether a show is hung well. If a show feels awkward or pieces seem out of place or a picture were hung crooked then one would notice the installation right away! Hanging an exhibition takes a lot of time and care and a creative eye. Next time you go to an art opening or exhibition, take a moment to notice the way the art is displayed, the different methods of hanging, the sequence of works, whether its hung high or low and how it makes you relate to the pieces. These photos are from the  @vancouverislandschoolart‘s Curatorial  Studies I class that installed the current show in the Slide Room Gallery.
This exhibition is open until 5pm on Monday December 12, 2016.

Coming soon: The Imaginary Machine! Exhibition, artist talk and drawing workshop!
A machine is a tool containing one or more parts that uses energy to perform an intended action.  As we are losing our understanding of how machines work or how we can fix them, this subject is both one of nostalgia but also one that allows us to rethink our relationship to the machines around us. From Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times, to Yves Tingley’s self-destructing kinetic machines to Eva Hesse’s idiosyncratic drawings that contain machine-like parts, artist have long fantasized about the possibility of creating imaginary machines. The artists in this exhibition have been invited to create an “imaginary machine” using whatever medium they choose. The results will be surprising, delightful and enigmatic. Curated by Wendy Welch.
