Merlin understood why Lancelot felt so indifferent toward the special treatment. There were so many people who needed or could do with rooms like these. He too wished that there wasn’t such a divide, but it would take someone in power to do something about it. “You were always a good man, Lancelot. It was my fault in the first place for wrongly getting you involved with the knights. I am glad, though, that you are here now under your own making. Arthur trusts in you, as do I.” And the rest of the kingdom. Merlin knew that Lancelot was well admired among the people.

At least he is not alone in feeling unworthy of such a large room when others do not get it. Lancelot has had to fight and earn his place in Camelot and some part of him thinks he has yet to deserve it. But Arthur does and he’d never go against his King even about something so minor as a chamber. “You were only trying to help me be what I wanted. Earning it however is what I should have truly sought. The honour of a knight comes from having earned such a title.” Well, that and nobility. “I’m surprised Arthur hasn’t given YOU your own quarters yet.”

An eidetic memory and a knowledge of technology that he’s designed from the ground up always makes him a favourite at these events. Either the next question is about whether he’s single or if he will show off a new technological marvel. “So, what brings you to a dinner with dignitaries? Either you’re another tech mogul or you have to be someone’s date.”

“I hope so. I never wanted the magical folk to feel the way my father made them feel. And I’m sorry that you felt such fear here too.” Arthur wondered why Merlin hadn’t just left, why he had bothered to come to Camelot in the first place. Surely people like the Druids would have taken him in, but he didn’t ask. Merlin had his reasons for being there. “It was legal long before you were born. I doubt you would know anything, but it will be a freeing feeling. Gaius knows what it was like before the Purge, I’m sure we could ask him how things were.” And he hoped that Gaius didn’t advise him against freeing magic. His mind was made up and he could tell already that it had made Merlin HAPPIER, which was honestly one of his main goals too. Not that he would EVER admit that out loud. 

It isn’t Arthur’s fault how he has been forced to feel all these years. After all, he has been clearly trying to make things right. “It wasn’t any different from Ealdor except the chances of escape would be smaller.” Then again, their dungeons are ridiculously easy to escape from when magic is involved. Or Arthur himself since he’s often helping people get out of there. The sorcerer nods. “Gaius knows too, by the way. It’s why I was sent here. Mother hoped he could teach me to better control my powers and avoid being found out. Guess he failed in that a bit if you noticed.”

Survive. He just has to survive until Gil finds him. Gil always finds him in the end. But can he when he’s slowly bleeding out from a knife wound and trapped with a man who worked with his father? Who is able to get into his head just as Martin Whitly has. Malcolm knows that at least for the moment he is playing the part. Giving John exactly what he wants for the moment even if the damage is being done to his own psyche.

Be the profiler, not the son. It’s harder to do than it is to think that’s for sure. A way out will present itself he just has to be patient. Hope Gil has found any leads that shows the team where he’s been taken. “Patience isn’t exactly easy in a place like this. I don’t like small spaces any more than you do.” The girl in the box had been trapped in a small space for God knows how long. It is a key part of his own nightmares.

“Do you think this is what Martin Whitly would want? You to kidnap and turn his son against him?” It’s his only hand left to play. His father might not be able to do anything in jail but he sure as hell wouldn’t be happy that this is the outcome that has been reached.

The young princess is the talk of Camelot and Lancelot isn’t surprised. A kidnapped princess locked in a tower does tend to become local gossip. It makes sense that Arthur would request for her first few days with them that she have a knight to help. He feels honoured to have been chosen for such an important task. “Good morning, your highness.” The knight bows as she approaches him. “Is there anything you wish to do this morning?”

“You must have me mistaken with another man.” Lancelot knows that his name often sparks anger over what Morgana made him do. But his mind is clear now because of Merlin and he has to find a way to atone for the damage he has caused. His natural sense of duty requires him to help whoever he can until he finds his path once more.
