MEREDITH.

            ‘ — – - Correction, I’m still not cleared. I’m stuck            siting here, day in and day out waiting for my papers            to get signed. The doctor won’t budge on me…says            I’m not ready. So what if I saw Derek almost bleed            out…so what if I lost… ‘ She paused, pursing her lips            to keep them from trembling. Blinking a few times,            her cerulean hues slowly flooded with unshed tears as            she clenched down. ‘ I…am fine…we are all fine you are            fine. Derek is fine…Cristina is fine…Lexie is fine….we            are all fine. ‘ 

         “ -- you’re not? -- i heard -- never mind. of course he won’t clear you, you’re husband got shot in front of you, you don’t just get over that grey. ” he swallows hard, thank god yang had saved him. Mark wasn’t sure he’d know how to exist in  word Derek did not; they were brothers, not by blood, buy by everything else that mattered.  “ oh please --- you are not fine ---yang is not fine, she operated with a freakin’ gun to her head! owen got shot! and Lexie? --- she’s running around reciting murder facts to anyone who’ll listen, she is NOT fine --- none of you are fine --” mark retorts, shaking his head, denial was something grey seemed to have down to a fine art, but not fine enough for the shrink to buy it.  

             “ wait, what? -- what did you lose? ---”

        The events of that day still echoed in his mind, the bullet holes and blood stains had long since been cleaned up but their was a dark ambiance that still filled the hallways of Seattle Grace Mercy West. The fear of losing Lexie still anchored in the center of his gut, although she wasn’t his to loose. They were nothing -- and yet, he felt an overwhelming protectiveness over her, even after hearing her deceleration of love to a dying Alex Karev.  Despite part of him knowing she was simply granting a dying man some solace and peace, it hadn’t made the words any easier to swallow. 

         Mark loved her; still -- and perhaps he always would. 

      He watches her like she’s a fragile doll about to crack any moment, he’s tried to talk to her; to get her to open up, even just a little -- his usual go to reeses cups had failed him, and the more Mark lingers and tiptoe’s around her the more she seems to push back. He doesn’t even think she should be back at work, not this soon -- not after everything she went through. The ER is swamped today, and he finds himself in the pit in an all hands on deck, with the new hires not all started yet, and he spots he with a patient, he watches for a moment, he can see the situation escalating so he approaches, cautiously, “ dr. grey? -- is everything okay? do you need assistance? ---” he says through clenched teeth, biting at the flesh of his cheek. 

     “ dr grey --- can i speak with you for a moment, in private -- please? ” he calm, level tempered, at least externally, inwards he torn between guilt and worry, because he knows she’s losing it, as much as she can’t admit it, and as much as he doesn’t want to either, in his heart, he knows. “ --- now.” // @mclexipcdia

KAREV.

“dude, are you still mad about me nailin’ your ex? relax. i don’t do crazy anymore. and have you seen her lately? she’s pretty messed up.”

    “ seriously? -- i had to check her into PSYCH after savin’ your sorry ass from bleeding out on the elevator floor --- if it hadn’t been for Lexie you might not have been so lucky, KAREV --”

RED.

     “—-I’d hardly call a mass shooting entertainment, Mark.”

         “ --- i wasn’t talking about the shooting, what kind of sadist do you think I am? --- that was rhetorical, by the way. ”

“ why’d you think I never told her about seeing her and alex comin’ outta that on call room --”

MADDIE.

“i’m sure you don’t, because you’re one of the most clueless people i know.”

“you may be my boss, but you’re my brother first, and sisters kick their brothers. deal with it.” her eyes rolled, arms crossed as she huffed at him. “this is only going to come back to haunt you, you do know that right? i’m not afraid of taking all my anger out on you. and yes – it was mr. fluffikins, and he was adorable. excuse me, what? yes he did. mom and dad said he’d be happier with other rabbits to play with…” 

      “ you WOUND’T ---”  he teases, but really mark should know better than to test maddie. 

        doctor or not, she would always be her 12 year old little sister, much to her annoyance. “ he was adorable, when we wasn’t savaging my hand like a chew toy --- seriously? -- oh mads, it’s cute that you still believe that at 26 --- sure, he went off to play with the other rabbits ---”

LITTLE GREY.

“ No. “

 “ no? --- you sure, they’re delicious. ”  he says popping one into his mouth, coy smirk playing on the edges of his lips.

JACKASS.

“ come on now. the sun is shining, the birds are singing. no need for such gloominess. ”

MADDIE.

“oh, please. i know they call you a man-whore around here, mark. you should be ashamed – setting such a bad example for your little sis.” she shook her head at him, but smiled nonetheless.

“keep it up, markie. don’t you even think about calling me raddie maddie, or you’ll find yourself with a knee to the groin. that name was not cute – it made me sound like a rodent!” a groan answered his question. “seriously, mark? seriously? i mean, sure, it wasn’t bad. but that’s not the point!”   

    “ i have no idea what you’re talking about ---” 

         “ you can’t kick me, i’m your boss ---  a rodent? ” he laughs shaking his head, “ a really cute adorable angry little rodent, like that rabbit we had --  what was his name? mr fluffikins, very original  maddie. you know he didn’t really go live on a  a farm with all the other rabbits, right? --”

LITTLE GREY.

“ I’m fine, okay ??  You don’t – I don’t need you to tiptoe around me like I’m so fragile little girl who’s about to break down again. I’m not. And I won’t. “

 “-- i’m not tiptoeing around you Lex. ” complete lies.  “ of course fine --- sure -- ” he says sliding a packet of resees cups along the table to her,  he’d learned one way to get lxie talking was to get her eating; distraction was key. “ peanut cup? --”

KAREV.

        “— did you know that Robbins brings the best donuts? Ten bucks and I’ll tell you where her secret stash is.”

    " you really do like to take what’s not yours, huh? ---- we’re you an only child?  i get that vibe. ”

RED.

    “Never a dull moment around here, huh?”

  “ c’mon you and me both know you missed this place ---you don’t get this kind of entertainment at ocean wellness. ”

MADDIE.

“and i’m sure all you do is sleep, right?”

“first of all, i haven’t been maddie since i was, like, ten. secondly, yes, we are all grown ups. but that doesn’t mean when i’m looking for a place to sleep that i want to see someone’s ass in the air.” 

“ i am a professional --- quiet frankly I am offended at your accusation. ” he smirks, unable to keep a straight face for long. 

“ oh my bad, you prefer mads?  little s? -- what was it that you REALLY hated, oh yeah, raddie maddie ---  that one was  derek’s doing not mine --- although it was kinda cute, you gotta admit --- was it at least a NICE ass? ”

          he’d watched alex karev almost bleed out of the floor of the damn elevator, had his ex committed to the psyche ward, and almost lost his childhood best friend. it had been a dark few weeks at seattle grace, and now everything had returned to normal, or at least a semblance of what normal should be. two women he’d had relations with were dead, he’d watched crimson blood spill across marble floor unable to do a damn thing to save them.  irony at its finest --- or WORST, depending on how you looked at it. mark’s lost in his own little world as he stands at the nurses station, if he didn’t get cleared for surgery soon he was going to lose his freaking mind and have to commit himself to psyche too.

         “ did they clear you for surgery yet? --- i don’t know how much longer i can play nurse, i’m fine ---  look at me, don’t i look fine to you? -- i should be cleared already, they cleared grey already and she watched derek almost bleed out on the freakin’ cat walk! ”

MADDIE.

“does anybody actually sleep in the on-call rooms, or should they just be renamed ‘hook-up’ rooms?”

      “ hey! i sleep in them ---just usually not alone --” 

“ -- you walk in on something you shouldn’t maddie? --- c’mon lighten up, we’re all grown ups here. ”
