The Hero's Journey, as described by Carl Jung, is the archetypal story of rebirth and renewal. The typical hero first faces some kind of enemy, or some misfortune befalls them. They must discard or they lose their material and spiritual wealth, their identity, before descending into the abyssal pit of monsters and fears. When they emerge, they are renewed in strength, courage, and have learned something. From there they use their newfound strength to defeat the enemy and climb the mountain to enlightenment.
