my take on queer baiting is that Person of Interest fully killed any sympathy i have for it as a plot device/ way of making people interested in the show or increasing hype via discourse & fandom drama

like the writers and showrunners heard fans saying “damn there’s some heavy and intriguing chemistry and general queer vibes here between these two women—maybe explore that”

and then they just… did it

we got both the extended tension of the “will they, won’t they” while Shaw and Root circled each other. we got the chance to watch them scope each other out and thirst for each other

and then we actually got a canon story line where they got together and there was a resolution (of sorts) to the question of “hey what would it be like if these two characters & actors with incredible on-screen chemistry got together for realsies? how would that impact them? how would it change the narrative?”

and it was so good. it was well done. it created new and interesting dynamics in the story (trying so hard not to spoil it because this show is one of the rare cases where i think spoiling the story ruins some of the thrill of watching it the first time )

so like. if they can do that on PoI, a relatively less fandom-y show that i only got into because my grandparents always watched it alongside the other procedurals they DVRd or TIVOd or whatever so they could watch them in the evenings, then other shows (especially ones with bigger budgets and more engaged audiences) can do that too

they just choose not to. because of laziness. because sometimes telling a worse and less interesting story means bigots will enjoy the show unchallenged and so they don’t take any creative risks that might cost them a handful of viewers. or because of their own bigotries and lack of imagination

i really don’t care what the reason is: if you don’t want to have an artistic practice that evolves, shifts, and grows due to audience engagement then TV just isn’t the medium for you. make a movie maybe

the trials and tribulations of evan buckley is actually so much funnier in hindsight cause his entire storyline for this season really was just. emotional distress. like HE didn't do anything but first he got into a weird psychosexual relationship with his ancient bigot boss then he got cursed with boils then his first boyfriend broke up with him then his sister got kidnapped then his two best friends/husband and child moved 800 miles away then his dad died. evan buckley and the year-long tummy ache. I hope his first storyline in 9a is getting on anxiolytic drugs

what is even crazier about the poker date night to me is like this is literally one of the only times were we have seen buck and eddie hangout outside of work that isn’t related back to the 118 or christopher or anything at all like it’s just two best friends dressed over the top very glammed up in suits and all on their night off going to a secret poker night hosted and attended by not only the chief of the fire department, but also the captain of the 133 and julie is also there and also the fact that eddie frequents enough for them to acknowledge that and also eddie planning the whole thing out once he realizes buck has these yk super genius math skills from the lightning strike and uses it to his advantage to make buck win all those steaks and also to yk pop a hard one over his best friend because that’s completely normal behavior to be turned on by said best friend the entire time at poker night and also when the lighting strike is mentioned eddie completely casually lets it slip out the exact minutes and seconds that buck was down because he knows that for 3 minutes and 17 seconds he had lost someone he loves and the fact that after this serious conversation the entire time you see buck winning you also see eddie looking at him like the most important person in the world because they are to each other they are so freak4freak it’s freaky there needs to be another term used for them because I swear idiots in love and freak4freak doesn’t do them justice they are just buck and eddie and eddie and buck being them like just being them
