“fanfiction,” as a concept, only exists because of intellectual property. at the end of the day, it’s just fiction. some of it is great, some of it sucks ass. sometimes, it can reveal something damning about the author—prejudices, biases, whether or not they think cats should be left indoors, how they feel about offshore tax evasion, whatever. that’s the nature of fiction. this is not news to anyone who’s ever opened a book

what’s truly unique about fanfiction is that it’s anonymous and free with a barrier to entry that ants wouldn’t notice climbing. also, it’s amateur by necessity; barring a few notable exceptions, nobody expects their gaudy slash fiction to win them an award or make them a million dollars. this crock pot of internet fuckery lends itself to two things—a monumental diversity of skill level and buck wild nasty behavior

fanfiction is neither god’s gift to all man kind nor an incurable blight. it’s just a thing. that exists. it’s neither defenseless nor indefensible. it can be harmful, helpful, or benign. more importantly, it’s not going anywhere, so i wish we’d stop arguing about whether or not it’s “legitimate” and talk about what’s actually happening with it instead

Did you see the update from GallaPlacidia (her email newsletter) that she’s deleting all her fics and podfics 10/1? I mostly most Good Omens stuff so I doubt my followers have read her stuff. I just want to pass along the word so people could download if they want to save her works. They’re all so good! I’ve always loved your posts and you seem to have a wide audience so figured I’d reach out to you, if you’d like to share the info. And if anyone has suggestions on how to save her podfics that would be helpful! I listen to them on my phone and have no idea how to download them. 🤪

Oh no, that’s heartbreaking news! I don’t receive her newsletter so I had no idea. How sad, I know lots of people love her work and will be truly devastated 😰😰 thanks for reaching out and sharing this, I am definitely saving my favourites and I hope everyone has the chance to do the same. Oh and good question about podfics, I’ve never downloaded any either but maybe my followers have some tips to share? If your plot feels flat, STUDY it! Your story might be lacking...

Stakes - What would happen if the protagonist failed? Would it really be such a bad thing if it happened?

Thematic relevance - Do the events of the story speak to a greater emotional or moral message? Is the conflict resolved in a way that befits the theme?

Urgency - How much time does the protagonist have to complete their goal? Are there multiple factors complicating the situation?

Drive - What motivates the protagonist? Are they an active player in the story, or are they repeatedly getting pushed around by external forces? Could you swap them out for a different character with no impact on the plot? On the flip side, do the other characters have sensible motivations of their own?

Yield - Is there foreshadowing? Do the protagonist's choices have unforeseen consequences down the road? Do they use knowledge or clues from the beginning, to help them in the end? Do they learn things about the other characters that weren't immediately obvious?

I just wanted to thank you because i didn't expect to feel so seen 😭 or find someone who felt the same way. I didn't get to speak much about it, but YES i also do feel very strongly about emotional imbalance. It's so important to me. Thank you so much for that kind and understanding answer.

This has encouraged me to really look at some of your personal recs knowing they're from someone with similar sentiments. I'm not saying this to put pressure on your personal recs! Hi again, anon! I’m so happy you felt seen and validated 🫂 I noticed some comments on that post sharing the sentiment so we’re not as few as you might have thought! I’m very excited to hear your thoughts on those lists but I’d maybe start with the ones below and see if they work for you. Most explore Draco’s redemption arc in ways I personally found satisfying and without belittling any character. I avoided any fics that deal with hardcore emotional imbalance and (I love the secret identity trope but I didn’t want to take any chances) and tried to include some recent, lesser known fics in case you’ve already read the popular ones. Also - I’m biased af when it comes to my pal @tackytigerfic but imo you should definitely start with Modern Love then make your way through their superb catalogue! Quick as a Flash of Lightning, Unhurried as Eternity by @onbeinganangel { 10k, E | September } ★ I can tell you I love the content of this fic, and the feeling of being cared for so deeply by a treasured friend, but one of the things I love so much about this one is that I can feel in every word that Mari loved writing it, and that brings me endless joy.

A Little Death Never Hurt Anyone by @tackytigerfic { 4k, E | September } ★ I don't know how Tacky so effectively takes me apart with each and every one of their fics, this one included; I loved the worldbuilding, I loved the prose, and I find myself coming back to this piece to relish in their brilliant writing again and again

A Library Full of Stars by @fw00shy { 5k, T | October } ★ getting to know fwooshy's writing has been incredible, and getting to experience this fic even more so; their way of crafting this library, of talking about love in this fic left me breathless once more.

A Grey Shrike Alighted upon my Wishbone by @opalesqueopioid { 7k, E | November } ★ I had no idea what to expect when I began this fic and I could not put it down -- which was a problem, because I was also entirely breathless as I read it (still am, honestly).

This Time Again (Next Year) by @gryffindorhearts { 2k, T | November } ★ one of the particular joys of 2021 was getting to see GH's art and fic come to life -- this fic's gentle coming together (despite time, despite work, despite everything) echoes that same feeling of well-earned peace I always get from GH's craft

Elise's Favorite Fics Self-Rec

I was tagged by @lqtraintracks and @magpiefngrl to talk about my 5 favorite fics. Thank you lovelies!! 💚 It's so hard to pick favorite fics. There's something I love about almost all of them. I decided to choose 5 fics that held particular personal significance for this tag game.

Draco Malfoy’s Stupendous Seduction Seminar (Explicit, 8,700 words)

Draco Malfoy offers to help his coworkers to improve their seduction techniques, with unexpected consequences.

My fic for the first ever @lcdrarry fest! It's inspired by the *bend and snap* scene in Legally Blonde, which is one of my favorite scenes in one of my favorite movies, and I couldn't wait to write it! I love DMSSS for many reasons: I loved writing a really confident, really flamboyant, gay Draco in tight jeans and piercings. I loved that Harry questioned his entire sexuality the minute he saw Draco at the Ministry cafeteria. I loved the ensemble cast of coworkers, the Department of Lost and Found, the humor and banter. The fic poured out of me and I had so much fun writing it. It was also a gift for my friend @erin-riwen and I was happy to make her smile during a tough time. I'm very fond about it for all these reasons.

The Generation Who Lived (Explicit, 14,755 words)

In the months leading up to the 10th anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, Draco Malfoy writes a series of articles about war survivors. So far, he’s managed to interview everyone he wanted. Everyone...except his old nemesis, his one-time lover, and the elusive war hero who stubbornly refuses to be featured in Draco’s interview series; Harry Potter.

Written for HD Consent Fest, I remember instantly falling in love with the prompt and claiming it as soon as claiming opened. I love journalism as a profession for Draco, and loved exploring his redemption arc (and the changes in the wizarding world post-war) through that lens. It's a getting back together fic, another favorite trope of mine, and I loved - LOVED - writing Luna in this one: with her head in the clouds and her feet firmly down on earth, forcing Draco (and Harry) to confront some difficult truths and forgotten desires. I think the structure of the fic is clever and serves the overall story and highlights the many facets of consent.

Re: Harry's Crush (Teen and Up, 3,700 words)

The interdepartment betting war at the Ministry gets out of hand, Millicent and Hermione get scheming, Harry Potter ends up wearing black eyeliner, and everybody ends up getting more than they bargained for.

Oh, I love this one! It's such a funny little fic, and every time I re-read it I'm so pleased with how clear and recognizable everyone's voice is! It's an epistolary fic written as Ministry memos, where we find the Aurors and the Unspeakables in the middle of a betting war. It's silly and sweet, full of oblivious Draco and Harry pining so hard for one another, scheming friends, and Gryffindor-Slytherin friendships. I almost never wrote this fic (I talked about it here) and I'm so glad I pushed through the mental block and put it on paper.

What An Auror You Make (Mature, 2,088 words)

There is an advantage to being in love with his unsuspecting Auror partner. Only one advantage, sure, but not a inconsequential one: Draco’s never short of wanking material.

This fic was part of my "Wordless I Love Yous" tumblr prompt fics, written for my dear @coriesocks. Though it's not my most popular prompt fic, it's by far my favorite one. Told from Draco's POV, who's desperately pining for his Auror partner, it contains some of my favorite lines ever, along with a shared shower scene that's hot enough for a Mature rating. I remember getting so many lovely comments for this little fic. I had been writing fic for a few years already, but the reception made this one feel really special.

Burn The Witch (Explicit, 95,800 words)

When Harry Potter is sent in to investigate Draco Malfoy’s successful potions company, posing as Draco’s bodyguard, he doesn’t know the case will launch a series of events that will change his life — and Draco’s.

If I had to pick one - this is the fic I'm most proud of. I love it for so many reasons. I love Draco in it - founder of a potion empire, single father, competent, smart, and sexy. I love that he's so lonely and vulnerable behind all the walls he's built. I love that Harry's equally lonely and vulnerable in this fic, yet goes about it like the brave Gryffindor he is, bringing Draco's walls down one by one. I'm seriously not over these two. I love the queer and neurodiverse rep. I love that you can really feel Draco and Harry's love for each other through the entire fic. I love the smut in it - particularly the one in Chapter 13, which is the best sex scene I've written imo. I love that the plot takes many unexpected turns and differs from a classic "spy" fic. I love how everything came together in a much more seamless way than I could have dreamed of: the worldbuilding, the recurring themes and details, the relationship between Harry and Draco, Draco and Scorpius, Drarry and all their friends, even the plot. I love love LOVE the epilogue. I don't know where the idea for this fic came from. There are things that I would have done differently if I had written it today, but I like that it's the best thing I could have written at that given time. I doubt I'll ever write another Drarry fic as long and involved as this one, but it was the fic that made me realize I could do this, you know? I could write.

♬ He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not { T | 6k } - outsider pov! outsider pov! MA has crafted a lyrical, heartbreaking story told from Astoria Greengrass' POV as Draco drifts away from her and into a new lover's arms. this is a beautiful reading of Astoria's character and a gorgeous take on Draco & Harry's love.

♬ Lights Down Low { T | 4k } - oh gosh, this musician/Muggle world story absolutely stole my heart. MA writes a messy-but-loveable Harry and an endearingly sexy Draco as they work through all the history (new and old) that they have together. it's 4k but so rich in detail and subtle worldbuilding that it read more like 20k.

♬ Paper Rings { E | 50k } - this story masterfully weaves together teenage Draco & Harry's love story with their adult love as they meet and collide amid Harry's divorce with Ginny. 's full of heat and beautiful characterizations, and you'll fall in love all over with them as they finally find their way to each other.

♬ You Know the Feeling { M | 12k } - this fic is a beautiful dive into the slow, organic way that love can grow, warm and full of heart. it takes this Draco and Harry time to figure out what it is between them, but the journey is wonderfully fun, full of detailed worldbuilding, and rich in thoughtful post-war character arcs for everyone.

♬ Staring Into Open Flame { E | 25k } - oooh this one sizzles, quite literally, as Draco & Harry dance around each other, while there's an arsonist on the loose in Wizarding London. The mystery is intriguing, the smut scorches, and the twists will keep you guessing...

Love Galore - 35 Romantic Shorts

This is a (very much) belated reclist for 2022’s Valentines Day - I put it together in February as one of my projects to celebrate my most recent follower milestone but I wasn’t feeling it back then, so I decided to save it and post on June 12th to celebrate the Brazilian Valentines Day instead - as you can see I’m not very good at keeping up with the intended calendar 😂

This is, as usual, a quite personal reclist, and the idea was to highlight fics that represent peak romance for me, including a generous amount of fluff, smut, angst, and everything in the between. And because love manifests in many forms I wanted to focus on the romantic aspect but also cover important topics such as non-sexual intimacy, found family, asexual and trans representation. This list is sadly limited to short fics (up to 15k) otherwise it would be impossible to post everything at once, but I’m playing with the idea of doing parts 2 & 3 with longer fics, maybe a rare pairs version as well?
