PJO — The Battle of The Labyrinth & The Last Olympian
okay, this has been rattling around in my brain for the last week so now you get to hear about it too.
i feel like it’s usually assumed dionysus is overall very lax and passive towards his children, especially with how he treats all of the campers at camp half-blood. however, there are two key moments i genuinely tear up a bit at, because we almost never see the gods show clear, straightforward emotions involving their children. but dionysus? it’s extremely clear how important his kids are to him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the first image is from the battle of the labyrinth, when grover is explaining that pan has moved on and has left his purpose in the hands of the satyrs. dionysus comes in and asks to hear his story from the top, and of course, silenus is as disrespectful as ever. the times we do see dionysus angry, it’s because he’s been disrespected or provoked, at least previously in the series. but in this moment, he’s furious because he lost his son. he’s grieving.
the second part is from the last olympian, when he visits percy from some rundown bar where they live under a rock and have no idea america is being turned upside down! (wish that was me, phew…)
it’s really touching to see a god specifically ask a hero to ensure their child is safe. in the entirety of the first five books, we never see that from anyone else but dionysus.
anyways. all of this to say, dionysus may be the god of wine and madness, but by god, he’s a father too. he loves his kids, and in the show, when he tells percy he’s his father, a part of me has to wonder if maybe he would’ve been better for percy than poseidon.
