I see an awful lot of attacks on Ready Player One. Each time I cringe and assume the problem is something hurtful like transphobia or something. It feels like, over and over, people are attacking “bad writing”.
I’ve looked at a few of the attacks and quotes and sure, the writing looks kind of lazy. But what I see reminds me of Ender’s Game. It looks like literary porn for an adolescent. They like to see a hero who is not only the best at everything, but always wins.
This isn’t terrible. It’s OK for people to like those kinds of stories, and it’s OK to make movies out of them. Let people have fun.

The candy canes in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp were a bad idea.
One of the things I like about Pocket Camp is you can leave it then come back without real penalties. Time-limited things like candy canes break that. It’s part of what I didn’t like about Animal Crossing.

Participation trophies do feel like a good metaphor for how boomers and millennials interact.
There was a problem: self-esteem issues motivated by highly competitive environments. It was clear a solution was needed.
The chosen solution is window decoration. I sure as hell didn’t get a self-esteem boost from participation trophies/ribbons. They made neat scrapbook fodder, and little more.
But the people who introduced them felt like they “did something” and declared the problem solved. And now, they’re using that solution as evidence for why they believe their children are “weak”. Mostly because it seems Boomers, to generalize, have a serious problem with admitting personal failures and being the responsible adults they expect their children to be.
Thanks mom and dad. Now I have crippling performance anxiety AND a neat scrapbook.

There are no stories told in a vacuum. There is no prophecy lighting our way. There is just a lot of darkness to be afraid of. So it's a good thing we are not afraid.
There is no Superman in that phone booth. There is no rewarding our faith. There is no one who can save us, So it's a good thing we don't need to be saved.
There are no starships in low-Earth orbit, no aliens to save us from ourselves. There is no voice willing to speak for us, so it's a good thing we know how to yell.
There is no chosen one, no prophecy, there's no such thing as magic. There is no light at the end of this tunnel. So it's a good thing we brought matches.
