I just watched Love Never Dies, and now I’m thinking it needs another sequel. But unlike it’s dramatic predecessors, this one will be a wacky, Starkid-style comedy in which Raoul and the Phantom have to put aside their differences and attempt to raise Gustave together. Highlights include: -Erik is constantly showing up in mirrors around the house. (Raoul: “Dammit Erik I’m TRYING to brush my teeth!”) -The mirror tricks are also very irritating to teenage Gustave who has brought his first girlfriend home and would like some PRIVACY, dad! - Erik dropping chandeliers on people at the slightest provocation. Raoul has no idea where he keeps getting them, and he’d rather not find out. -Still, Raoul is grateful that Erik is willing to smash a chandelier to get him out of trouble when his creditors come knocking. -Erik is just. A Dramatic Bitch. All The Time. -He may occasionally make a dancing dramatic entrance a la AVPS Lucius Malfoy. -They have to move to a new town when Erik gets into a disagreement with Gustave’s music teacher. -Raoul slowly falls in love with Meg Giry as they try to pick up the pieces of their lives. -Erik throws a Drama Fit when he finds out about Raoul and Meg. “How DARE you do that to the memory of Christine?” “Uh, I’m moving on. Like an actual person. Not a creepy basement guy who can’t get over a girl after 15 years.” -The prologue of the show is an adult Gustave explaining all of this to his therapist. -At the end, the therapist walks out of her room and Erik’s in the mirror. - Other references to ALW works appear occasionally. Gustave tells his dads he saw the cats in the alley having a dance party last night (they dismiss it as a child’s imagination). Potiphar is the landlord (his wife occasionally comes by to flirt), and Superstar Jesus is their neighbor, which comes in handy when they run out of wine.

so i will never understand tumblrs obsession with reactionary politics and the death of nuance but here we are.
children need healthy platonic friendships with adults. children need all manner of platonic relationships with adults and segregating children from ALL interactions with adults simply because some adults would like to cause them harm not only doesnt stop that from happening but also makes children EVEN MORE susceptible to abuse.
children should have literally no shortage of adults in their lives who they know, feel comfortable with, and are safe around. isolation ALWAYS increases the risk of abuse. children who dont have positive interactions cant identify behavior that isnt okay because they dont know any better! a child that has a healthy network of adults in their life does! they can compare behavior between adults and say “this isnt how everyone else treats me and i feel weird about it. maybe i can ask xyz who doesnt treat me this way if this is weird or not”
this also gives them more places to turn when things go wrong. a child whos in trouble but only has their parents and peers has a very limited number of options. ESPECIALLY if their parents are the adults in their lives who are harming them, which is overwhelmingly the more likely option. children are much more likely to abused by a family member than by a stranger. a child with more adult friendships, like for example, the woman who works at the library and always talks to them about tv shows they love, the guy from the comic book store who they see every week and who always recommends them new titles to try, the college age coach of their after school sport, the nurse from their school who they eat lunch with because the feel more comfortable there, that child has a large number of adults who they can now turn to in a crisis.
yes, there will always be bad people with bad intentions, but the solution isnt to isolate children from all adults therefore making them even more susceptible to harm if and when it happens. the solution is to surround children with as many examples of healthy positive relationships as possible so that they can easily identify when a situation is not right and then have an unlimited number of resources to go to for help.

Holy shit. Holy fuck. I got my little sister the book “sex is a funny word” because she’s at that age where she’s reading a lot of puberty books and I’d heard that this one was lgbtq+ friendly, but I was checking it over for accuracy and I gotta say, even with the totally gender neutral language they were using to talk about body parts and the really respectful way they talk about gender and their portrayals of same sex couples I was so fucking sure that I would have to mention that not everyone gets crushes or feels attraction separately. Because these books never talk about that. But here it is. The one thing I was so absolutely sure wouldn’t be included.
I honest to god dropped the book when I saw this I was so shocked. And I’m so fucking happy right now. I can’t exspress how much I wish this was mentioned in the books I read when I was a kid. It would have saved me so much confusion, and I’m so happy that kids today are gonna read this and know that it’s okay and normal to not get curses. I’m so so fucking happy you have no idea.

really though the whole "cringy mary sue oc" thing really is attacking an important outlet for lots of kids... All those tropes have a place in it:
Tragic backstories and lgbt+ identities are clearly signs that those are things that the kids creating the ocs live with. Most of those kids struggle with abuse or are lgbt+, and either way need a character to relate to
Self-inserts who hang out with their favorite character or variations on their favorite character? yeah chances are that kid feels pretty alone and needs to feel like someone who they love and look up to respects them back. see the abuse thing again
"Flawless personality" when you feel like everybody hates you you start to feel like a shit person. so having an oc like you who is also flawless is a place to embrace the things you like about yourself and get more self-confidence. I don't know, this one's hard to explain. See the next one
"Overpowered or underpowered" yeah, an OP oc is usually because the kid feelspowerless and helpless and nobody wants that. a relatable oc or self-insert who has lots of power? instant self-confidence boost. If my oc who's like me can have power, so can I. With underpowered characters that's just an outlet of that same frustration
Anyway yeah cringe culture is dead. All this applies to adults too, not just kids! you're never to old to make a fun character!
Plus not to mention that all this stuff specifically preys on neurodivergent kids.
If you can think of any other tropes like this feel free to add on

This is such a big one for me (Chuck). It doesn’t matter if you are a fundamentalist or a lefty theologian or a mystic. Anywhere on the spectrum. The idea of “dying to yourself,” “denying yourself”, “decreasing so He might increase” etc. is an essential tenant of the Christian faith and I think it’s so toxic. I remember constantly warring in my mind over whether my desires were from myself, and therefore needed to be destroyed, or from God and needed to be uplifted. Those mental gymnastics in and of themselves are so so so exhausting, (since, get this, all of your thoughts and desires are your own!) but beyond that we just end up suppressing important parts of ourselves and the resulting dissociation with our own minds and bodies is so toxic. The result is deep depression, anxiety, and a lack of identity. And the younger we are when we start to dissociate the longer the journey to wholeness. As #exchristians there is so much work we have to do to get to know ourselves again and heal from the idea that we are evil and are better off as lifeless puppets. What are some of the challenges you have faced or are facing on your journey to validate yourself again? • • • • • • • • #religioustraumasyndrome #rts #exvangelical #postevangelical #formerchristian #exchristian #formerfundie #churchtoo #emptythepews #youareyourown https://ift.tt/32mp3Cb
