It should be noted, that the one time when Cardan did get them mixed up while poisoned. Taryn was wearing Jude’s wedding gift….earrings that make the wearer more beautiful to the eyes of other. That’s what it took for him to finally mistake them

i KNOOWWWWW 😭😭 this has been my favourite fact about him since i read TWK for the first time. like he had to be DOUBLE intoxicated on the verge of death to fall for the twin switch trick.

i can't remember who the commenter was, but someone said on one of my posts that Holly used Taryn & Jude being twins as a tool to show that Cardan's love for Jude was not based on looks. and i completely agree.

i would also add that Holly used the situation with Locke (and indeed Locke himself) as a foil to how Cardan loves Jude. for Locke, it didn't matter which twin's window he threw rocks at that first night. they were interchangeable to him because they looked the same.

for Cardan, it was always Jude, the twin he couldn't stop thinking about no matter how hard he tried, and the other twin.

additionally, if nearly everyone can't tell them apart to the point where even the man who raised them didn't notice a switch for days, it proves two things about Cardan:

he is incredibly observant

he loves Jude more for who she is as a person

y'all know i'm the biggest Taryn apologist, but our man Cardan had horse-blinders on to everyone but Jude. he had a candle that only burned for Jude. Cardan was dying of poison and he said "wait you can't see me throw up". Jude walked in and said "i'm Taryn" and Cardan said "lmao no you ain't". meanwhile, Madoc, who'd lived with Jude all her life, took DAYS to figure it out. Jude said "i hate you" and Cardan said "i think about you. often. it's disgusting and i can't stop." like.... ????

on a more serious note, i think Cardan has had way too much trauma centred around betrayal and cheating to ever do that to Jude. Taryn may look like her, but Cardan has always been able to tell the difference, even before they fell in love.
