tried my best to avoid spoiling Hodari's romance for myself but I caved and read some of his lines and ohhhhhh my goddd i'm going nuts. gruff middle aged man stuttering and nervously laughing. the sheer amount of times he says "darlin'" once he's comfortable. something about the line "keep my name on your lips darlin'" is DESTROYING me. this romance feels like a targeted attack. i need him.

Palia does some smart things with character relationships. part of that's the live service element, like the fact that you have to wait an actual 24 hours between giving gifts to NPCs, making it impossible to speedrun maxing out friendship and leading to relationships feeling pretty natural and realistic due to spending more real-world time with the characters. now that I've spent a few (actual) days getting to know everyone, they casually bring up their experiences and opinions, like Najuma randomly mentioning how she wishes humans would appreciate her prosthetic instead of asking about her amputation. just like how a person you've been talking to daily would start to open up after a bit.

similarly, when characters mention, for example, that they've seen me hanging out with Reth or how much I've been working to establish my homestead, it comes across as more genuine. of course you'd notice what a newcomer's been up to over the last few days. overall it just leads to relationships that develop more naturally than back-to-back heart events, something similar games can't reasonably hope to avoid(​not knocking any heart events in other life sims! I just find this approach refreshing in contrast).

I also really like the writing choices. the live service aspect adds flavor but it'd just be annoying if the dialogue and characters weren't engaging. I'm mostly fixated on Hodari and I love that you have to befriend Najuma before you can romance him. it might seem like a small detail but it makes the characters feel much more realistic- of course the single parent needs to know you get along with his kid before he'll consider letting you into both their lives, that's how it'd be if these were real people feeling out an actual relationship.
