On those long afternoons between services at the cathedral, we older choristers were allowed to relax in the park. I loved the feeling of the breeze on my legs. I had to be careful of two things though, in order to stay out of trouble - firstly keep my uniform clean, and secondly conceal the E.M. Forster novel I was reading inside a copy of the bible, in case one of the priests were to come by.

If I unbutton my waistcoat will I get into trouble? This job is hot work, but I need to put some money in the bank for the start of university. I’m thankful for the shorts, although when one of the boys first suggested we be allowed to wear them to help keep us cool, what we had in mind wasn’t quite like this.
