You ever think about how Aqua knowingly lied to Ventus about his origins, saying he's always been with her and Terra?

Aqua (and Terra, but Aqua more so) has always been protective of Ven, but this seems a bit too much for her to come up with on her own. Eraqus probably had something to do with this, most likely ordering them to say as much.

So not only was Ventus chained to his home physically, he was also mentally chained, fed a falsehood about his past. Maybe this is just because Ven had reacted so poorly to questions about his past, back when he first met Terra and Aqua. But it's awfully convenient, isn't it? You want to keep Ven at home no matter what, so why not lie to him and tell him he's always been here, just in case he might get curious about where he really came from and venture out?

I loved when “Drift Compatible” entered pop lexicon cause we were in DESPERATE need for a way to platonically express “one of us to the other is as a limb to a body; we are a left and right feet of a dancer; we do not need to speak because any one word inspires an exchange of unspoken words that conveys a full conversation in which a mutual conclusion is determined in an instant”. When I was little I was fully 100% certain that vampires would have hollow fangs. I never explained this to anyone but I knew in my child heart that when vampires bit people they used their hollow fangs to suck blood like two tiny straws.

This seemed very sensible and left less mess than just biting someone with sharp teeth, obviously.

I think it was because I was an Animal Facts kind of kid and I knew venomous snakes could have hollow fangs so I just superimposed that idea onto vampires.

The funniest part of this is that it never came up in conversation, people would reference them drinking blood and I’d be like yeah of course, and in my head I’d be thinking: with their little sippy teeth, they drink blood, we’re on the same page.

It wasn’t until sometime in high school that the topic was broached in a way that made me question this. When I voiced my conviction about hollow teeth I was laughed at. Once I was questioning whether it was a silly thing to think I was forced to imagine how hard it would be to suck blood through two tubes tiny enough to be in teeth moreover how would you make inner fang suction and realized I’d had the weirdest headcanon about vampires for most of my life.

Editing to add that after a day full of vampire silliness I’m actually delighted to know I wasn’t the only person to think this.

I sometimes see folks talk about the lack of historical transmasculine narratives and culture in comparison to transfeminine ones, and regardless of validity I just want to say that it’s incredibly cruel to draw the conclusion that it just must’ve been easier for us/less necessary rather than acknowledging that for a lot of human history people AFAB were treated as literal property with very little autonomy. Hell, in the states, people AFAB weren’t even allowed to open bank accounts without permission from their “husband” until 1974. Regardless of how things are now, I think it’s incredibly important to keep in mind how transmasculine bodies and narratives were controlled (and still continue to be) by governmental and societal powers by way of our assigned sex, along with our transness.

I don't think you have to read either essay to grasp the basic concepts

death of the author means that once a work is complete, what the author believes it to mean is irrelevant to critical analysis of what's in the text. it means when analysing the meaning of a text you prioritise reader interpretation above author intention, and that an interpretation can hold valid meaning even if it's utterly unintentional on the part of the person who created the thing. it doesn't mean 'i can ignore that the person who made this is a bigot' - it may in fact often mean 'this piece of art holds a lot of bigoted meanings that the author probably wasn't intentionally trying to convey but did anyway, and it's worth addressing that on its own terms regardless of whether the author recognises it's there.' it's important to understand because most artists are not consciously and vocally aware of all the possible meanings of their art, and because art is communal and interpretive. and because what somebody thinks they mean, what you think somebody means, and what a text is saying to you are three entirely different things and it's important to be able to tell the difference.

male gaze is a cinematographic theory on how films construct subjectivity (ie who you identify with and who you look at). it argues that film language assumes that the watcher is a (cis straight white hegemonically normative) man, and treats men as relatable subjects and women as unknowable objects - men as people with interior lives and women as things to be looked at or interacted with but not related to. this includes sexual objectification and voyeurism, but it doesn't mean 'finding a lady sexy' or 'looking with a sexual lens', it means the ways in which visual languages strip women of interiority and encourage us to understand only men as relatable people. it's important to understand this because not all related gaze theories are sexual in nature and if you can't get a grip on male gaze beyond 'sexual imagery', you're really going to struggle with concepts of white or abled or cis subjectivities.
