PROMPT 4 - Literacy was prevalent within the Prep classroom where I had my most recent placement. They had a large array of books in their class library. And regular reading was encouraged. Their favourite books to show me were the Where’ s Wally books. although these did not have many words, the preps were working on persistence and concentration skills to find Wally. I read them the book ‘Smarty Pants’ after we had been on a circus excursion. It was a big book and this was my first experience reading a big book. They loved it so much that I decided that the next day, for the writing block, we would read it again and come up with our own rhyming words so that we could make our own Smarty Pants book for the class library (example posted above). The other noticeable literacy related stand out in this classroom was Jolly Phonics. This was my first experience with this and I found it fantastic for Prep children. It is building a basis of underlying skills and knowledge to read and write the English language. It was fantastic to see that they had all learned the actions for all of the letter sounds and were able to articulate words that they may not have seem before. I will certainly be pushing to use this program if I become a Prep teacher in the future. The only thing I would have done differently is perhaps introduce dotted thirds at this point of the year for writing, I know that it is not seen as necessary until they can write in a straight line without them, however I feel that it would benefit and help to guide their letters, especially letters with tops and tails ( ’j’ ‘y’ ‘t’ etc.)
