This is a little different than my usual stuff, but I'm working on a scholarship submission and I'd like to share my thoughts regarding the topic!
Essentially, the prompt is about the ways that it's uniquely challenging for trans students to afford higher education compared to their peers. To me, it feels intuitive because this is my personal lived experience, but I realize that's not everyone's history.
Firstly, it's important to remember that only 36% of adults consider their families supportive of their transition, and that number goes down to 26% for 16- and 17-year-olds. Consider this with research that shows that in 2021, 21% of trans people were reported as living in poverty (at the time, the national average was 11.6%). This is lower than that of 2020, which was 35% of trans people.
For many, if not most trans people, living comfortably and safely requires therapy, HRT, potentially surgeries, and other forms of care, all of which cost money. If you're not lucky enough to have health insurance that covers this, all must be paid out of pocket. As a student with tuition, the basic cost of living, and limited time to work, this is virtually impossible to achieve. Of course, campuses tend to be more accepting areas than average, but this doesn't account for the personal distress that many trans people have regarding their presentation and the way they're treated because of it.
Thank you very much for reading all the way through, and if you're a trans student looking for some help with tuition, feel free to take a look at the Transgender First Scholarship: https://www.onlinedegree.com/transgender-first-scholarship/
