Who and it’s Usage

Who in Korean is “누구”.

Different usages of Who:

1.      누구 + 를 (=누구) + VERB

2.      누가(=누구가) + VERB

3.      누구 + 와 or 누구 + 하고 and 누구 + 랑  +VERB

4.      누구예요 or 누구세요

5.      누구 + 에게 or 누구 + 한테  + VERB

6.      누구 + 에게서 or 누구 + 한테서  + VERB

Usage 1: 누구 or 누구를 + VERB

Use “누구” or “누구를” whenever “who” is the object of a sentence.

Examples:

1.      Who do you love?

o    누구 사랑하나요?

2.      Who do you respect the most?

o    당신은 누구를 가장 존경하나요?

3.      Who are you looking for?

o    누구를 찾으세요?

4.      Who will you pick?

o    누구를 선택할 건가요?

Usage 2: 누가 or 누구가 + VERB

Use “누가” whenever “who” is the subject of a sentence.

Examples:

1.      Who loves you?

o    누가 사랑하나요?

2.      Who likes ramen?

o    누가 라면을 좋아합니까?

3.      Who did it?

o    누가 그랬어?

4.      Who is at home?

o    누가 집에 있어요?

Difference between 누구 and 누가

“who do you love?” —–> 누구 사랑하나요?

The above sentence would have a completely different meaning if you used “누가” instead.

“Who loves you?” —–> 누가 사랑하나요?

Instead of asking about the person you love, this question is asking about the person who loves you.

Usage 3: 누구 + 와 or 누구 + 하고 or 누구 + 랑 + VERB

Use “누구와” or “누구하고” or “누구랑” whenever we have to use “with” in who questions

Examples:

1.      Who do you eat with?

o    누구와 먹어요?

2.      Who are you going with?

o    누구하고 갈거야?

3.      Who did you play with?

o    누구랑 놀았어? 

The sentences using 랑 should only be spoken in casual situations.

Usage 4: 누구예요 and 누구세요

1.      Who is it?

o    누구예요?

2.      Who are you?

o    누구세요?

3.      Who is that girl?

o    그 여자 누구예요?

누구예요 is used when you are asking a person about someone else.

Usage 5: 누구 + 에게 or 누구 + 한테  + VERB

Use “누구에게” or “누구한테” whenever we have to use “to”  in who questions

Examples:

1.      Who will you give it to?

o    누구한테 줄 거예요?

2.      Who did you ask that to?

o    누구에게 물어봤어요?

3.      To whom should I write a letter?

o    제가 누구에게 편지를 써야 하나요?

에게 in general is used more often and is more familiar and cute while 한테 feels overly “grammary”.

Usage 6: 누구 + 에게서 or 누구 + 한테서  + VERB

Use “누구에게서” or “누구한테서” whenever we have to use “from” in who questions

Examples:

1.      Who did you get it from?

o    누구한테서 받은 거예요?

2.      Who did you hear that from?

o    누구한테서 들었어요?

3.      From who did you get the present?

o    선물은 누구에게서 받았니?

Often in spoken conversations “서” is omitted. Therefore in spoken Korean in each of the examples above 에게서 can be replaced by 에게 and 한테서 with 한테.

에게/에게서 is used more commonly than 한테/한테서.
