Andrei loves his son, he truly does. However, a part of him is extremely emotionally distant towards him. He simply doesn’t know how to connect with his son on an emotional level. There’s also a dark part of him that blames his son for Lisa’s death, as she died in childbirth with him. He doesn’t mean to and he hates himself for even considering holding his son responsible, but he can’t force those thoughts and that blame to go away.

Pierre could see the fear in Andrei’s face, and it broke his heart. He wanted nothing more than for his dear friend to be happy. It hurt to know that this was yet another thing eating away at his friend, that he feared Pierre would react to it badly. There must have been, Pierre knew, a source of that fear, and he had a good guess about what that was. “Of course I think so,” Pierre insisted, wanting to comfort him as best he could. “Andrei- I’m queer, you know.” He had assumed his best friend was aware of that, but given the conversation, he felt he might need to clarify.

At Pierre’s confession, Andrei’s eyes widened. He’d had absolutely no idea that his friend identified that way. “You...are?” He questioned, swallowing thickly. He pulled away slightly, his mind reeling. Pierre was attracted to men as well. Possibly more than one man. Andrei’s first instinct was to recoil, but he wouldn’t be able to explain why. Pierre was his best friend. This changed nothing. It shouldn’t change anything at all. Especially since Andrei had come out first. Especially since the one man Andrei found himself attracted to was Pierre. So he wouldn’t have to worry about a negative consequence of Pierre being attracted to him. Still, Andrei felt awkward and a little confused. “Since when?” He asked, not meaning to be rude.

“And why not?” ANDREI questioned, a certain snap to his voice. He sounded angry, felt angry, though he couldn’t put into words why that was. He turned away from Pierre and took a deep breath, rubbing his face. “Why shouldn’t I?” He asked again, in a milder tone this time. “It’s true, isn’t it? It’s all true.”

ANDREI was at the park, sitting on a bench and simply watching as his young son ran around the playground. He smiled a bit as he watched him, feeling truly happy for the first time in a long, long time. Or maybe he wasn’t happy, not quite, but he was content, wasn’t actively miserable. He felt that small amount of emptiness that followed him wherever he went, but it wasn’t as terrible as it usually was. Kolya was smiling and running around, the wind in his curls and sun on his face. For a brief, flickering moment, Andrei wished that Lisa was there. He knew that she would be so proud to see her son, if only she had lived to see him grow. That old, melancholy feeling returned and Andrei zoned out for several moments, thinking of his late wife. He should have done more. He should have been there for her more. There was so much he regretted. 

He was snapped out of his thoughts by a loud cry. His head jerked up and he saw Kolya laying on the ground, clutching his knee, having evidently scrapped it during his play. Andrei stood and rushed over to him. “Hey, you’re alright.” He scooped him into his arms. “Do you need me to kiss it better?” He asked, setting the young boy down on the curb.

Pierre could tell something was wrong even before Andrei began to speak, but he couldn’t tell what. When his friend finally spoke, Pierre looked at him in surprise. He had no idea. He had always assumed Andrei was straight. He didn’t respond for a few moments after Andrei spoke, trying to think of the right thing to say. He could tell this was difficult for him, and he didn’t want to make matters worse. “Hey,” he said gently. “That’s okay.” He put a hand on his friend’s shoulder. “Thank you for telling me. It’s okay, you know.”

Andrei searched Pierre’s face, fear evident just behind his eyes. What would his friend think of him? Would he hate him? Scorn him? Turn him away? Andrei wouldn’t be surprised if this were what he’d do. Truth be told, Andrei didn’t know how he would have reacted if he were in Pierre’s place. He had nothing wrong with gay people, of course not, but learning that one’s best friend was gay? That was something different. It changed things. This wasn’t something Andrei could go back on. He stared at his friend once Pierre spoke, relief washing over him. “It’s...okay?” He asked him, swallowing. “You truly think so?”
