The Job Opening

Since you were a kid, you always wanted to help people who suffer from injustices and can’t face powerful entities which take advantage of their position. So, you decided very soon that you’d become a lawyer and work in favor of the ones in need. You were always a very good student in school and could easily get into a reputed bachelor’s degree in law. After working hardly, you finished your degree as valedictorian of your class, and all your colleagues were very happy for you, since you were always nice, helpful and in good spirits.

After some well-deserved holidays, you started looking for a job. As the meticulous person you are, you collected information about all the job openings that interested you, ranked them and thought very well before making any decision. Eventually, you made a decision: you would concentrate all your efforts in your favorite firm, among the ones hiring, and show the best version of yourself during its recruitment process.

You opened an application with this firm, sending your data and doing an online test. Of course, you were called for a first interview, and they really liked you. The next phase was a group dynamic with other candidates. There, besides you, another guy stood out, but you two got everyone’s attention for very different reasons. While you spent the whole time trying to help and incentivizing everyone, he spontaneously assumed a leadership role, and didn’t have any problem pointing out bad decisions and flaws of other people. However, both your very different styles helped the group being successful in the tasks at hand.

Both of you made it to the next round, along with some other people. As time went by, you made some friends with the people involved in the recruitment process and always tried to get close to the guy who took the leadership role in the group dynamics, but he always seemed to act strategically, and you couldn’t ever really trust him. After some rounds, all candidates except you and him were eliminated, and a final interview with the firm partners would decide which one of you would be hired.

In the day before the interview, he sends you a message, asking to meet for a drink. You find it strange, as he never really wanted to hang out with you, but you’re curious about what he has to say and accept it. When you get to the bar where he is, you become surprised with his attitude, as he is acting nice and showing empathy and interest in you. After some chit chat, you understand where all of that is coming from. He begs you to step down from the process and let him be hired, because it has always been his life dream to work in a firm like the one you’re applying to, and his family would be so proud if he could get a job like that, because they worked very hard to put him through school.

You tell him that you understand his situation, but you also have dreams and expectations, and getting the job would also mean a lot to you. When he sees that you’re not reacting the way he anticipated, his tone changes completely and he becomes aggressive, telling you that you should think very well about your actions, and that you’re a sheep destined to be eaten by lions in life. After that, he storms out, visibly annoyed, and you go home puzzled with what just happened.

The next day, you wake up with a text from him saying: “I’m so sorry about what happened yesterday. The fact is that I really want this job, and that made me say things I don’t really mean. Of course we’re both very good candidates and the firm will be well served with either of us. My interview is at 4 and yours at 3, but I can’t talk with them before making things right with you. What do you think of coming early and meeting me at 2, so we can give a pep talk to each other and make sure that we both show our best colors in our interviews?”. You find the message honest and sweet and agree to meet him at the entrance of the building. After some exercise to clear your mind, you take a shower, put your best suit on, have lunch and leave for the interview.

You get to the building at exactly 2 pm, and find him waiting for you, also wearing a suit. He tells you: “I’m so glad you accepted to do this. I arrived earlier to explore the building and found an old reading room in the basement, where clearly no one goes anymore. We can go there so no one bothers us while we get prepared for the interviews.”. You agree and follow him, going down the stairs to the basement and entering a very isolated room in the back. He enters after you and says: “Take a seat in that chair, I just need to pick some things I stored earlier in that cabinet that will help us accomplish what we came here to do.”. You are still thinking about those words, when you see him holding a knife and some ropes. He notices how surprised you are and says: “I really meant that sheep thing, and it’s time for you to be eaten by a wolf. I worked too much to get where I am and I’m not going to risk a weak idealist like you stealing the job I was born to have. Now, be quiet and put your hands behind the back.”.

“Don’t do this, you’ll get into trouble, and I don’t think anyone will be able to help you after this.”, you reply. “Even now, you’re trying to help me. How annoying can you be? As a matter of fact, no one knows you’re here or will hear you. I’ll release you after I nail my interview, and they tell me how disappointed they are that you didn’t show up. Then, it will be your word against mine. Now, do as I say and let’s get this over with.”, he adds. He pulls your arms behind your back and ties your hands together. Then, he ties your ankles together and wraps your legs and chest in a lot of rope. “Time to open your mouth now, come on.”, he then tells you, with a bandana on his mouth. You comply and he shoves the bandana inside your mouth, rolling a lot of PVC tape around your head to make sure you can’t spit it out. Then, he ties 2 white cloths over the tape. While you struggle, trying to get free or say something, he shows you a key and says: “I even made sure I could lock this room, not to take any chances. Take this time to think about your future, which will not involve working here, that’s for sure.”. With a smirk on his face, he leaves the room, locking the door.

Although you do the best to get rid of the ropes and gags, you eventually realize how well tied and gagged you are, stop fighting, and simply wait until he finishes his interview, returns and lets you go.
