(note: have now also listened to ep. 28 and 29.)
on S&Co John and the podcast: framing the stories as a podcast that also airs in-universe raises some interesting questions about John Watson, who started and now edits the podcast—particularly about what he includes and why.
because of the live-recording format they chose for S&Co, Watson can only cut or bleep things out; he can't change the content of the clips except by rerecording them. almost no names or addresses are bleeped, so if he faked them to protect the real ones, he'd have to basically rerecord the whole episode and have it acted out.
assuming that the podcast we hear in real life is identical to the podcast airing in the fictional universe, either everything Watson shows us is real, or everything he shows us is fake.
if everything is fake and the podcast is a story-within-a-story, Watson is a much more unreliable narrator than anyone has let on, and in fact his reliability as a narrator is thoroughly shot lol. who's to say that the podcast isn't as fictional in Watson's own universe as it is in ours? (personally I think this is unlikely? since there are no overt hints in this direction, and pulling that on the audience so far into the show is risky enough that if I were a creator I would hesitate to do it.) I'm not sure where they would go with it, or how/when they plan to tackle it.
if, on the other hand, everything is real? Watson is airing a true crime podcast in which many of the people involved are fully identified and may still be vulnerable, and which contains some clips where someone asked him to stop recording and he lied that he had. that's wild! possibly illegal!
even the original short stories have this thread of potential ethical concern (aside from the whole politically sensitive cases thing, many of the stories contain emotionally fraught scenes that a participant might not like to be public entertainment), but the nature of the podcast turns it up to 11. and it hasn't been addressed, beyond some musing on his part about true crime reporting (prompted by Lilian's involvement).
either way, I hope they shed some light on it one way or another in future (unlike ACD). the podcast's content and production could say something about the character of its creator, John Watson, and it'll be fascinating if/when it becomes clear what that something is.
started watching Sherlock & Co. last week and have now caught up all 27 episodes. I have... a bunch of thoughts actually, mainly regarding these incarnations of Sherlock and John, and about the framing device (i.e. the podcast). it's like 1am now so I'll sleep, but tomorrow I may start typing up some stuff.

on S&Co Sherlock: I'm enjoying the portrayals of his behavior and his skills. there's a marked decrease, for example, in the assertions that Sherlock is a cold, uncaring person ruled primarily by logic and misanthropy, or that that is what he wants, or needs, to be. he may not care about the same things as most people around him, or in the same ways, but he cares. if S&Co Sherlock has ever been afraid or defensive of showing it, he's also been able to grow past it.
second, his science of deduction is a skill, not a superhuman quirk or magic trick. there's no fear that explaining how he does it will take the impressiveness out of it. there's awareness that it relies on the information he has available (e.g. in Gloria Scott, he knows what the boquila is because of past botany research, and he switches Hunter's and Lionel's roles in the raid because he didn't have enough information to deduce otherwise). it's an unusual and extremely well-honed skillset, no more and no less.
it makes for a more mundane view of his character. vulnerability, mistakes, oversights, and care from Sherlock are as natural as they'd be from anyone else with his personality. aligning as it does with my personal interpretation, I'm enthusiastic about that mundane humanity.

Crisostomo Ibarra is so fucking dramatic I love this guy
he got upset about finding out his dad's corpse was dug up and thrown into a lake - understandable, I'd be pretty pissed too - so now he's storming off trampling crosses and bones on the graveyard
Like Ibarra pls those are somebody else's dad

The portrayal of the precolonial and early colonial women babaylan as oppositional to patriarchal colonization configured them as protofeminists... Mangahas claims that whereas the women babaylan were annihilated, assimilated, or compromised by the colonial order, the power of Philippine women was not fully lost... Many present-day women professionals, mostly from urban and/or diasporic middle-class backgrounds, have been attracted to the image of the babaylan and have ascribed the babaylan title to themselves... These developments have inspired many in the face of ongoing violence and discrimination against women, immigrants, and other minorities, in domestic and work places, in the homeland and in the diaspora. Scholars like Zeus Salazar, however, observe the alienation between what he calls the "babaylan of the elite and the babaylan of the real Filipino [who] still sit with their backs against each other." Salazar warns that the "Babaylan tradition could be co-opted by new-age type spirtuality-seeking affluent, middle class Filipinas whose end goal is individual spiritual enlightenment. ...Not a few have pointed out the problem of extracting the babaylan title as though it were a commodity to be acquired without first going through Indigenous channels and protocols... To abstract the title from the process and relationships just because one is attracted to images of Indigenous women that converge with feminist models or because one has the privilege to do so is facile and dmeonstrates a lack of respect for Native ritual specialists and their communities.
