Empire star Jussie Smollett arrested for lying about Chicago attack

Empire star Jussie Smollett arrested in Chicago after he was charged with lying to police when he claimed he was attacked and beaten by two masked men shouting racist and homophobic slurs, Chicago police have said. Smollett, 36, who stars in the TV drama Empire, ignited a firestorm on social media by telling police on 29 January that two apparent supporters of Donald Trump had struck him, put a noose around his neck and poured bleach over him. Chicago police say Smollett, who is gay, turned himself in on Thursday morning to face a charge of making a false police report when he said he was attacked. Police superintendent Eddie Johnson plans to hold a morning news conference and Smollett is expected to appear in court later on Thursday. He was charged with felony disorderly conduct on Wednesday. The charge could bring up to three years in prison. It could also force Smollett to pay for the cost of the investigation into his report. In less than a month, Smollett went from receiving an outpouring of support for being the apparent victim of a hate crime, to being accused of fabricating the entire scenario. Initial reports of the assault drew outrage and support for him on social media, including from California senator Kamala Harris and the TV talkshow host Ellen DeGeneres. Referring to a published account of the attack, Trump told reporters at the White House: “It doesn’t get worse, as far as I’m concerned.” But doubts about Smollett’s claim started with reports that he had not fully cooperated with police after telling authorities he was attacked. Then detectives in a city bristling with surveillance cameras could not find video of the beating. Later, two brothers were taken into custody for questioning but were released after two days, with police saying they were no longer suspects. Police announced a “significant shift in the trajectory” of the investigation last week after the brothers were freed. The charge emerged on the same day detectives and the two brothers testified before a grand jury. Smollett’s attorneys met with prosecutors and police, but it was unknown what they discussed or whether Smollett attended the meeting. In a statement, attorneys Todd Pugh and Victor Henderson said Smollett “enjoys the presumption of innocence, particularly when there has been an investigation like this one where information, both true and false, has been repeatedly leaked”. The announcement of the charges followed a flurry of activity in recent days, including lengthy police interviews of the brothers, a search of their home and their release after officers cleared them. Smollett, who plays a gay character in the hit Fox show, said he was attacked as he was walking home at 2am from a downtown Subway sandwich shop. He said the masked men beat him, made derogatory comments and yelled “This is Maga country”, an apparent reference to Trump’s campaign slogan, before fleeing. Earlier on Wednesday, Fox Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Television issued a statement saying Smollett “continues to be a consummate professional on set” and that his character was not being written off the show. The series is shot in Chicago and follows a black family as they navigate the ups and downs of the recording industry. The studio’s statement followed reports that Smollett’s role was being cut amid the police investigation. After reviewing hundreds of hours of video, detectives did find and release images of two people they said they wanted to question and last week picked up the brothers at O’Hare airport as they returned from Nigeria. Police questioned the men and searched their apartment. The brothers, who were identified by their attorney as Abimbola “Abel” and Olabinjo “Ola” Osundairo, were held for nearly 48 hours on suspicion of assaulting Smollett. Police said one of the men had appeared on Empire, and Smollett’s attorneys said one of the men was the actor’s personal trainer, whom he hired to help get him in shape for a music video. The actor released his debut album, Sum of My Music, last year. Smollett was charged by prosecutors, not the grand jury. The police spokesman said the brothers appeared before the panel to “lock in their testimony”. Speaking outside the courthouse where the grand jury met, the brothers’ attorney said the two men testified for about two and a half hours. “There was a point where this story needed to be told, and they manned up and they said we’re going to correct this,” Gloria Schmidt said. She said her clients did not care about a plea deal or immunity. “You don’t need immunity when you have the truth,” she said. Some, however, took the bride’s side, saying that she made the right call. If the groom insulted her so early into their marriage, who knows what he would have done later on, one person wrote. “If this is how he acts right at the beginning, it’s better to leave him,” one Twitter user commented. “A marriage with no respect, is a failed one right from the beginning,” another one added. Some suspected that the bride was simply looking for an excuse for the quick divorce, which isn’t that far-fetched considering Kuwait’s problem with “interest-driven marriages”. According to an article in the Arab Times, the loans and financial assistance provided by the state to newly-married couples has caused the divorce rate in the Middle-Eastern country to skyrocket in recent years. Ahmed Buhari Withdraws From 2019 Presidential Race, Declares Support For PMB

The presidential candidate of the Sustainable National Party (SNP), Ahmed Buhari, has finally withdrawn from the Feb. 16 presidential election and declared support for President Muhammadu Buhari. Buhari made his decision known in an interview with SUNRISE daily, a breakfast show on Channels Television and on his Instagram page. The decision may have come as a shock to his followers as he said his stepping down from the race was to drum support for All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari. Acording to Ahmed Buhari, he is stepping down from the race because he believes that president Buhari is the right man for the job. He noted that the Buhari government has also made some gains in the last four years it came on board in the country. The former SNP presidential candidate accused Nigerian youths of not backing young persons for the presidency. He regretted his lack of resources to compete with the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). It would be recalled that Ahmed Buhari was once a member of the main opposition PDP but left for the SNP to fulfill his dream of becoming the country’s leader. Meanwhile, Kingsley Nwagu, the Vice Presidential candidate of the SNP has distanced himself from the decision of his presidential candidate to support President Buhari. Nwagu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview that Ahmed Buhari was alone in his decision and that the party had replaced his with Jaiye Gasikiya who was the runner-up during the presidential primary election. “We are still in the race; Ahmed Buhari acted on his own without the party’s consent, so, as it is, the party has not adopted any candidate neither will it adopt. “But if it will, it is left for the party to decide; we have already written to INEC and we are elevating Jaiye Gaskiya who contested primary election with Ahmed Buhari. “INEC is yet to respond to our letter notifying them of the development in the party, and we expect a positive response from them. “As it is, the ballot papers carry only the parties’ logo and as such we are calling on all our members nationwide to still thumbprint on our party logo,” Nwagu said. Feb. 16 presidential race would see President Buhari of the APC, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and over 50 other aspirants slugging it out for the country’s number one seat.

Owolabi vowed to mobilize other defectors to campaign vigorously for the victory of the Oyo South Senatorial District candidate of the APC, Governor Abiola Ajimobi; state governorship candidate, Chief Adebayo Adelabu and other APC members. The State Chairman of APC, Chief Akin Oke, represented by his Deputy, Mr. Lekan Adeyemo, received the former ADP members to the APC at the party’s state secretariat, Oke-Ado, Ibadan. Woman who killed her 6-year-old stepdaughter by slitting her throat executed in Saudi Arabia

A Saudi woman who was convicted of murdering her 6-year-old stepdaughter by mercilessly slitting her throat two years ago was executed in the Eastern Province region of Al-Ahsa on Monday. The woman took the girl out of her school as she was playing in the yard, taking advantage of the fact that they lived together in the same house and were known to each other. She then took the girl to a deserted area near the school and slaughtered her using a kitchen knife. The woman returned home as if nothing had happened. But an eyewitness informed the police about the crime. He said he chased the woman whom he suspected of murdering the girl but she got inside her house. Police arrived at the scene and collected evidence. They arrested the woman, a mother of six, from her family home. The woman lived with her husband and stepdaughter in the same house. The girl’s mother was her father’s third wife while her murderer was his second. The woman confessed to the crime in court and she was sentenced to death. The appeals court upheld the sentence, which was carried out in Al-Ahsa on Monday after approval by the Supreme Court. The crime shook the peaceful community of the Eastern Province two years ago. It was reported that the school gate was open and the guard was not present, allowing the woman access to the schoolyard unnoticed. Ambrose Ali University ASUU chairman suspended over sex-for-marks scandal

The management of the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma in Edo state, has suspended the Chairman of ASUU branch of the University, Dr. Monday Igbafen over alleged gross misconduct bordering on sexual harassment and threats of sex for marks.   Leadership reports that Igbafen's suspension order was contained in University’s News Bulletin, dated 13th February and signed by the Deputy Registrar information/Public Relations Officer, Edward Aihevba, titled “Suspension of Dr. M.L. Ugandan, associate professor in the department of philosophy.”   The statement reads in part: “The university community is hereby informed that Dr. M. L. Igbafen, Associate Professor in the department of philosophy, has been suspended from duty, following his arraignment before the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee (SSDC) on allegation of gross misconduct bordering on sexual harassment and threats of marks for sex. He had earlier been accused of this offence and an investigative panel set up, which found him culpable and indicted. Recently, there was petition by the family of the female student involved, asking that Dr. M. L. Igbafen be brought to book, failing which the university management would be reported to ICPC for failure to act. On receipt of the petition, the University management asked for his comments. His response was found unsatisfactory. He was therefore arraigned before the senior staff disciplinary committee (SSDC)…As due process demands, he has been suspended from the university, pending the determination of the allegation leveled against him. He is therefore not allowed to participate or be involved in any university duties, activities or functions, except those related to senior staff disciplinary committee (SSDC) during the period of suspension''. Reacting to the allegation levelled against him, Igbafen said he was being framed by the school management. “If you have been monitoring development in AAU, Ekpoma, you will not be surprised that a paper like that is coming from the university administration. It is the climax of a desperate Vice Chancellor who has so many things to hide, which we will bring to the press. We have been battling the Vice Chancellor who wants to impose himself to the University. I am doing my job as ASUU Chairman, there have been several attempts to compromise me, but I refused, and when they discovered that they are unable to compromise me, the next thing is to resort to blackmail. Ask the Vice Chancellor, when did this issue of sexual harassment happened. The issue at stake is an attempt to cow the ASUU Chairman. A statement from the antigraft agency says the suspects who were rounded up at about 9.35pm on February 11, 2019 include, Chimezie Paul, 19; Oluwakayode Adebayo, 25; Mustapha Akeem, 19; Ezedigboo Paschal, 19; Mustapha Suleiman, 21; Mohammed Umar Faruk, 25; Abolarin Samuel Sunday, 23, and Anolarin Ridwan Gbolahan, 25. Shekarau blasts Kwankwaso, speaks on ‘fight’ with Buhari

Former Governor of Kano State and senatorial candidate for Kano Central Senatorial District, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau on Wednesday described the Senator representing the zone at the National Assembly, Rabi’u Kwankwaso, as an absentee Senator associated with failure. Shekarau said this during an interactive session with reporters in his house after rounding off campaign. He said he would have defeated Kwankwaso if he had contested against him, The Nation reports. He also described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Kano Central, Sani Aliyu Madakin Gini, as Kwankwaso’s political stooge who cannot make any impact in the election. Shekarau, lamenting about the spate of political violence in the state, accused Kwankwaso of being behind the ugly development Speaking on issue with President Muhammadu Buhari, Shekarau dismissed allegations insisting he has a cordial and perfect relationship with the president. Shekarau said: “To the best of my knowledge, Kwankwaso was an absentee Senator. For three and half years, I say this with heavy heart, I would loved not to say it but the facts are there, he had not set his foot on Kano soil. “There is no record anywhere that within the three and half years, so far as a Senator, he had ever come to consult members of his constituency, in whatever form. “So, I think there is nothing on ground to even compete with honestly. I think we are not bothered. It is left to the electorate to find out whether the former Senator has done anything. “The current senatorial candidate in PDP is his disciple. And I wonder what is there to sell to the people. “So, as for Kwankwaso I would have wished he contested again as a Senator.” On his relationship with Buhari, he said: “The issue of whether there is any disquiet between me and Buhari, I am not aware of any. “You see, people have their reasons of creating insinuations. I don’t think anybody has heard from Buhari himself that I have problems with him, if you do, please quote him that he said he has problems with Shekarau. “To the best of my knowledge, I have never said to anyone that I have problems with President Muhammadu Buhari. If I did, quote me that I have problem with President Muhammadu Buhari. “Well, we should allow people to have their perception, their own understanding. We have been the best of people. When we were in ANPP, we interacted together and he left and formed CPC. When we were doing the merger, I was the sole actor in the merger exercise. “I will always say boldly and proudly that anybody who writes the history of the formation of APC without my name, that history is incomplete because three of us led the Committee of 89 gentlemen and ladies for seven months to midwife the birth of APC. “So, as far as my relationship with Buhari is concerned, it has been cordial, perfect. We formed the APC. When I had cause to leave APC, I didn’t say it was Buhari’s fault or whoever fault. “It was on different grounds, and now that I am a senatorial candidate in APC, Buhari is a senior member of APC. “I am a member of APC, and we are going to work together as a President by the grace of God and as a Senator.“ Read the full article

NJC takes fresh action against Onnoghen, Tanko Mohammed

The National Judicial Council has set up a five-man panel to investigate the suspended Chief Judge of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen over allegations levelled against him. The NJC’s panel will also investigate the acting CJN, Justice Tanko Muhammad. The panel is to be headed by a retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice S.A Akintan, who like other members of the committee, is a member of the council. According to NJC’s Director of Information, Soji Oye, in a statement on Wednesday, the council took the decision after accepting “the result of the preliminary assessment of the petitions” against the duo. He said the council considered the “petitions to be worthy of further investigation and should not be terminated under Rule 17 of the Judicial Discipline Regulations of the Council.” “Consequently, the council constituted a five-member NJC Investigation Committee pursuant to Rule 20(1) of the Judicial Discipline Regulations under the chairmanship of Hon. Mr. Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.” NJC added that it received a new petition against Justice Muhammad from the Action People’s Party. Sport journalist, Bunmi Ashebu dies after months of battle with stage 4 'duct cancer'

42 year old sport journalist, Bunmi Ashebu has passed on months after a public appeal to raise funds for her cancer treatment abroad. Late Bunmi was diagnosed with stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma. A very rare form of bile duct cancer that had spread to her liver on the 23rd of May, 2018  and since then her life had not remained the same. When she was initially diagnosed, she was taken to a German hospital for treatment but after 6 weeks, she began reacting to the chemotherapy and her organs were failing and on the 20th of August, 2018; she was told that she had one week to live. She fought and lived on till she died yesterday.Feb. 12th. May her sould resy in peace.
