This tiny vestry in St James, Cooling, Kent has its walls lined with thousands of cockle shells: the emblem of St James. Unlike most other churches, this one is not found in the centre of a village but isolated in marshland, leading down to the Thames Estuary.

The shell symbolism comes from legend that when St James’ remains were discovered in Santiago he was covered in scallops. Shells were then adopted by pilgrims to show they had visited his shrine, and could be presented at abbeys & castles to receive a scoop of oats, barley, wine or beer. As much as the shell could hold.
