I find a lot of Marauders fandom (and fandom as a whole, but I notice it more with Marauders fandom) has no idea what child abuse looks like and how abusive family dynamics work - particularly involving abused children.

fwiw as hesitant as I am to give JKR credit, she knocked it out of the park with Harry and Sirius and Snape, but when fandom writes Regulus it tends to… hm… not quite understand how the scapegoat/golden child dynamic works and how rapidly that dynamic can shift when the scapegoat is out of the picture.

and I do think JKR was very clear that Sirius was favored as a young child, probably until he went to Hogwarts and thus Gryffindor, at which point the dynamic shifted – and suddenly Regulus was the good one; the one receiving all the praise – and then when Sirius left, it shifted yet again, leaving Regulus to uphold all of the expectations of his family alone, with little to no room for error.

I don’t think Regulus ever felt bad for Sirius, and probably resented him, at first for being the favored child, then for not obeying, and finally for leaving.

I don’t think there was ever any need to push him into becoming a Death Eater, either – what we see in his room is evidence of that, as well as what Sirius and Kreacher say – in large part because he would’ve parroted his parents’ beliefs, and also because he would have felt as if it were his responsibility to make up for his brother’s “failings” – to his parents (his mother was soooo heartbroken, after all 🙄), and to Pureblood society as a whole.

I like to think they’d have reconciled as adults, once Regulus realized how toxic his parents were, but who knows? There’d be a lot of resentment to work through on both ends.
