TW: shooting, Santa Barbara, violence

On the evening of Friday, May 23rd, a young man named Elliot Rodgers went on a shoot spree through Isla Vista. Some feel this man was simply a mentally ill anomaly, a loose screw who hated humanity and was saying appalling things.

But this likely wasn’t mental illness. He was a mentally ill man, but that doesn’t mean he did this because he was mentally ill, much like how I get cranky. but not because I’m a woman. He was pretty clear in hating women. And all he vocalized were cultural messages we in the United States get daily - his virginity made him less of a man, he was entitled to women, and violence was an acceptable way to regain his “alpha male” status. 

Elliot Rodger is not the only perpetrator. Hell, this wasn’t even the only violent act against uninterested women made in the same state IN A TWENTY FOUR HOUR PERIOD.

So mourning is not enough. We are survivors and victims, yes. But we also have an obligation to act, to correct the messages complacency has left intact.

Today, it is time to say Not One More. Not One More entitled man lashing out. Whether or not it’s all men is beside the point. One is already too many. Not One More person dead because of patriarchy and misogyny. or blaming ill people in their place. Not One More woman punished for saying no.

Consider this an open invitation to all able to participate — JOIN THE FIGHT.

This June 28th, we will say it together, throughout the country, in solidarity with Santa Barbara: #Not1More.
