the politics of light and dark are everywhere in our vocabulary鈥sa to writers: subvert this, reveal whiteness and lightness as sometimes artificial and violent, and darkness as healing, the unknown as natural

I know I say that I'm kinda nuts for doing the amount of visual research I do, but at the same time: Specificity is SO much more compelling and real feeling, and imo not getting references often makes things look more amateur.
Eg. drawing a sofa- my mental image of a sofa is something like this:
Like. Its a sofa. It works. But it's not very convincing, the pillows are kinda wrong at the back, and it's not really giving any information about the owner. Even if you want a basic sofa... What kind of basic.
comfy and cheap?
kinda rigid?
inherited? ------
who does this comfy cheap ikea sofa belong to anyway?
guy living alone?
teenage girl?
Grandma?
Anyway I'll get off my soapbox but specificity is sexy and fun and it can do your storytelling for you!

Spin the wheel. That's who's trying to kill you.
Spin the wheel again. That鈥檚 who鈥檚 trying to protect you.
(If you have zero idea about the name you got, spin until you see someone you recognize.)
(Six months ago, I did a version of this poll with about five hundred options on the spinner wheel. For this one, I more than doubled it.)

Hey gang, Nein Again has got me thinking. Would y'all be willing to help me with something?
Note the difference between "The Best" and "Your Personal Favorite", although I'm sure you all have impeccable taste
You can submit up to 5 episodes for consideration!
We're only talking about Campaign 2 here- not post-canon one shots or C3 episodes featuring the Nein
Depending on how many responses I get, the top few will be put in a poll on this website to come to a final conclusion.

The submersible floated in the icy black of the Challenger Deep, its lights a weak shield against the relentless untouched dark.
"Do you read me?" the human tried again, desperately, on the com. "Are you seeing what I'm seeing?"
There was nothing but crackle.
"Do you read me?" they asked again.
The creature spread a hand along the window, its fingers spindly, appallingly near human and not quite.
The human swallowed, but it did nothing to steady them. They tried to start the useless engine again but there was nothing. Eeerily, impossibly, nothing. They could not ascend. They could not flee.
They were going to die, weren't they?
The realisation came as distantly, as gently, as the thought that the creature wasn't pretty in the way of the mermaid stories. Oh, it had hair, and human features of a sort. Its eyes were bright and cool and hungry. It's mouth seemed soft and sweet. In the right shadows, it could be a human, sinuous and tempting.
Everything else about it was blurred, almost, like the ocean had scrubbed away all identifying marks. Worn a person smooth as a stone.
Despite themselves, the human took their hand off the controls and spread their own fingers over the glass in turn. Their palms almost aligned with the creatures, if not for the tips of razor sharp claws.
It tapped softly against the glass. Its head tilted, slow and lazy.
The human was not going anywhere until their oxygen ran out.
"Do you read me?" the creature asked.
The voice seeped through the crackling coms like water through a crack. An unstoppable drip.
The human's breath hitched in their throat.
It wasn't only that the creature was talking, taking control of the ship even in some way no thing should be capable of, but that voice...
Impossible. Familiar. Long lost to the sea and the thing wasn't them, it wasn't their lover, it couldn't be, but...
"No," the human whispered.
The creature opened its mouth again and the distress signal began to play out of its mouth, out of the comms, filling the silence all around. It was the sweet and terrible lure, the living writhing bait, that the human had followed for years. Searching for answers and secrets and peace. For them.
The human had never felt claustrophobic exploring before. Their vessel was their body, the sea a home away from home in so many ways. Their body suddenly felt too small, too airless.
It tapped on the window again, harder. It wouldn't crack. It couldn't crack. The pressure of the sea would kill them instantly if the window cracked.
(Maybe that would be kinder.)
More of them appeared out of the dark, swarming. Hands began to drag the submersible down, down, down.
"You found me," the creature said, full of relief and love and wretched longing. The tone did not reach the eyes. It smiled, and smiled, and then the smile stretched wider still until everything at their window was a mouth, gaping and full of teeth. "Let's go home."
