You know you're exhausted when you have spells of sleep paralysis and you just... give up being scared and think 'fuck it, if the demon's gonna eat me, its gonna eat me' and you try to sleep despite that looming Threat.
Apparently even the sleep paralysis demon took pity on me because then it tucked me in and patted my head a few times.
Also, been busy af at work with one more busy day to go and dear Lord how my body hurts 😭

Just so you all realize and see it in action:
This fic was finished in 2015 and the author hadn't had a comment since 2016. They appreciated the comment even though it was just emoji hearts, they were happy and surprised to receive love on their older fic.
Don't stop commenting just because it's an old piece or because you think you can't come up with something smart, witty or thoughtful to say.
Just say anything. Just put an emoji. Just let them know you appreciate their work.

There is a special place in hell for all the people behind these bot attacks that harm AO3 and the communities we built.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A reminder that Archive of Our Own is not Instagram or TikTok. It isn’t run by a big company with money and power. The site is a non-profit site run by volunteers (fans), for fans. And its main purpose is to bring people within the same fandom together and connect artists with audiences who would love and appreciate these artists’ works. It’s the only platform without any ads, without any censorship, without any of these capitalism bullshit. It doesn’t make users pay for any features and the only source of money they get, to keep the site up and running, is through donations. It’s literally a safe place for every fandom.
To think that it’s a target just because it’s easier to attack than those huge companies is just so sad.
Not to mention that there are so many genuine guest users out there (people who aren’t logged in / don’t have an AO3 account), and these people are directly affected by this whole thing, because they are no longer able to comment and connect with their favorite creators — and this still affects creators directly because I know for a fact that getting comments and being able to connect with their audience mean the world to them. I don’t blame AO3 for disabling guest comments altogether.
I do blame and curse the fuckers behind these bot attacks though.
If you try to sabotage AO3, out of all the other platforms out there, you are pathetic. You’re not just attacking a small, independent company, you’re trying to tear apart people’s communities and safe place. Disrespectfully, fuck you. Burn in hell.
Mad respect to all the brave soldiers that are AO3 volunteers who work harder than god fighting these scums.
I know these brave soldiers will win in the end (they always did, this isn’t their first battle, mind you), but in the meantime I’m sending them all my love and respect. They truly are the heroes.

I'm genuinely disappointed about Ao3 turning off guest comments. It's a necessity at this point from how many spam bots/AI bots there are, and people who plain up harass authors, but it's so fucked up that it has to happen, and honestly so sad because some of my favorite comments EVER are from guest commenters. And I hate that me leaving my works unlocked potentially opens me up to getting my work copied by AI, or my comments spammed with fucking porn GIFs which was apparently a thing that was happening. It's just honestly sad that we can't even have one good thing anymore without AI and shitty people ruining it.

Just saw Wattpad is starting their very own purge. As a fandom elder who lived through the MANY purges and fansite deletions of the aughts prior to Ao3’s existence, I give everyone my deepest sympathies.
Good luck creators.

I highly recommend migrating to Ao3. There is a learning curve but it is ultimately superior IMO.

I just found out one of my favorite AO3 authors of all time is a fucking neurosurgeon which was surprising initially just because I often forget AO3 writers are real people and not smut angels sent down from the heavens to make us feel alive, but in hindsight it makes perfect sense.
they are a fucking genius so. they just apply that genius to multiple fields.

Here's some reminders!
-Public library cards in the United States of America are free, $0, the overwhelming majority of the time, as long as you can prove your identity and your address
-If you cannot prove your address (you're experiencing homelessness or you just moved, etc), there may be a way around that to get you a free library card anyway, at least temporarily, possibly for a year or more
-If you lose your library card, many many many library systems will replace it for free and many others will do so for $1 or $2
-Many library systems are going fee or fine free as long as you return the book in good condition
-Public library systems in the US are not rolling in cash, generally speaking
-Library systems can only go fee or fine free if they are well-funded by other sources, so if your local library system charges late fees or card replacement fees and you don't like that, don't yell at the librarians - bother your elected officials instead and tell them you want them to give more funding to your local library

not to be controversial bc I know this is like…not in line with shifting opinions on fanfic comment culture but if there’s a glaring typo in my work I will NOT be offended by pointing it out. if ao3 fucks up the formatting…I will also not be offended by having this pointed out…
‘looking forward to the next update’ and ‘I hope you update soon!’ are different vibes than a demand, and should be read in good faith because a reader is finding their way to tell you how much they love it. I will not be mad at this.
‘I don’t usually like this ship but this fic made me feel something’ is also incredibly high praise. I’m not going to get mad at this.
even ‘I love this fic but I’m curious about why you made [x] choice’ is just another way a reader is engaging in and putting thought into your work.
I just feel like a lot of authors take any comment that’s not perfectly articulated glowing praise in the exact manner they’re hoping to receive it in bad faith.
fic engagement has been dropping across the board over the last several years, and yes it’s frustrating but it isn’t as though I can’t see how it happens. comment anxiety can be a real thing. the last thing anyone wants to do is offend an author they love, and that means sometimes people default to silence.
idk where I’m going with this I guess aside from saying unless a comment is outright attacking me I’m never going to get mad at it, and I think a lot of authors should feel the same way. ESPECIALLY TYPOS PLZ GOD POINT OUT MY TYPOS.

i'm committed to not getting involved in any ship discourse,
but here are a few things i want to point out:
maximus is the main character along with cooper and lucy. his leading role doesn't depend on his romance with lucy. to say that we must ship max with lucy or else we'd be "erasing" him is to reduce maximus to a love interest.
no one says max is boring. people say that max and lucy's romance is bland and not necessarily engaging as a romance. but we don't want an exciting dynamic only for lucy, we want an exciting dynamic for max as well. that is why a lot of people ship max with dane.
max x dane is a great and rare rep, especially in scifi. as an enby myself, i was pleasantly surprised by fallout having an enby character and i hope that dane's role will expand in s2. the show giving the enby character a romantic dynamic with the main would mean a lot to me personally, tbh.
fallout is not a pure morality manual. it's the freaky series for the freaks. if people shipping lucy with the ghoul makes you uncomfortable, then maybe you shouldn't be watching such a show to begin with. there is plenty of puritan-friendly content out there for you.
lastly, this is for the vaultghoul shippers. again, believe me as i'm speaking from my and many others' experience, engaging with the antis is a futile business, you'd be giving them what they want. just block them on sight. don't pay any mind to their bs and just engage with your side of the fandom. that will ensure your experience there being fun and pleasant and also the general/casual fans not finding you annoying.

Alright, to ao3's soon to be arriving Wattpad Refugees, a basic guide to general user culture:
1.) Unlike Wattpads vote system that let's you like each chapter, the ao3 equivalent kudos only allows one per work. Everyone is generally quietly annoyed about this. To engage with each chapter, you're heavily encouraged to comment. Trust me, it makes people's day.
2.) Ao3 has no algorithm. By default it's latest updated work first. You can find things to your taste through searches, filters and tags.
3.) 'No archive warnings apply' and 'user has chosen not to use archive warnings' mean two very different things. No archives warnings means the work is free from any content that could require a warning tag (character death, graphic depictions of violence, non-con, etc). User has chosen not to use archive warnings means it could contain any of the warning content, be it hasn't been explicitly tagged. Treat it like an allergen. No archive warnings apply is allergen free. User has chosen not to use archive warnings, may contain traces or whole chunks of the allergen. If you're likely to have a bad reaction, maybe don't take the risk.
4.) Speaking of warnings, ao3 has very few restrictions on the type of work that's allowed. Whatever your personal thoughts or feelings on that are, thats how the site is. You're likely to run across some dark subject matters and a lot of people are uncomfortable with reading that. You're well within your rights not like these works and have your opinion on whether they should be allowed, but harassing the authors of such works (or any works) is more likely to come back on you than them. Ao3 operates on a strong policy of 'don't like, don't read'. Use the tagging system to your full advantage to only engage with the kind of works you want to see.
We look forward to welcoming you all and seeing the fantastic works you create. Happy writing!
