On 19 January, 2009, 16-year-old Karina Barduchyan from St Petersburg, Russia, went to 19-year-old Maxim Golovatskikh’s apartment. Karina thought Maxim was her boyfriend and that he enjoyed her company, but she was wrong. When Karina arrived, she was greeted by Maxim’s friend, 19-year-old Yury Mozhnov. At some point, Karina was violently attacked by both Maxim and Yury. According to the two friends, she was taking a bath when the pair decided to attack her, drowning her in the process. After killing her, they dismembered her body, cooked parts of it along with onion and potatoes, and ate them. Once the taste for human flesh was gone, they went on to scatter the rest of her dismembered remains, including Karina’s head, throughout the city. The pair stated that they had planned the murder of Karina for a long time beforehand. In 2010, Yury Mozhnov was sentenced to 18 years of imprisonment while Maxim Golovatskikh was sentenced to 19 years imprisonment. In March, 2017, just 7 years into his prison sentence, Maxim hanged himself in his prison cell.
