Final Blog
I think that I’ve watched more horror movies that I ever did in my entire life! I was a little skeptical of taking this class, perhaps due to my lack of interests of supernatural. I'm not the type of person who would watch or interest in horror films. I get scared easily and anything about haunting, ghost or any spiritual ritual, I tried to stay away as much as I possibly can. Over the course, I’ve learned about the history of haunting and it originates cultures, which was very interesting and informative as well as the myth and lore of each topic, Vampires, werewolf, and zombies. I think that knowing the facts is not enough but learning and understanding about cultural fear and anxieties that were exemplified in horror films were also important. We got to see that showcased mostly in the 70s and how an American family, society interactive. I enjoyed watching the film “The Exorcist” more than other films because this film has shown the connection between culture and history behind a single mother and the religion. As we are aware, the Exorcist reflects the growing tensions in American society between traditional family values of the ’60s & ’70s and the anti-natalist movement. The obsession with possession and demon children because of children or a teenage girl being used as a metaphor for diabolical evil. Women’s sexuality was the focus of horror films during that time. And I think that the reflection of a women image during that time is still reflected in current society and religious aspect in some ways. However, this course has changed how I view the supernatural. I never thought that I would enjoy learning about the supernatural and gained a whole new knowledge about different religions and culture. I recommend anyone to step out from their comfort zone and give this class a chance.

The Brown Palace Hotel
Tumblr media
The brown palace hotel is the classiest and iconic hotel in Denver, allegedly been visited by almost every United States president since 1892. The hotel occupying a prime corner in Denver’s business district, which ideal for both downtown business traveler and tourists. The hotel has included a spa, fitness center and multiple popular restaurants and bars. When it comes to the Brown Palace, I imagined a luxurious Italian style hotel with a high price tag that is not on my stay list, expect the afternoon tea. They know to be one of the best afternoon teas in Denver. Before taking on this project, I know nothing about the haunted stories or much about the hotel history. Now, I have gained a better knowledge of the hotel as well as its rich rooted history. During our site visit, I couldn’t stay overnight but I was able to join the private tour with the team. It was my first time to visit the hotel. The hotel has been a four-star and four-diamond hotels since 1977. The heart of the boutique hotel is the atrium lobby, soaring eight stories above the ground floor and covered by a beautifully detailed stained-glass skylight. The atrium lobby balconies surrounded by cast-iron railings with ornate grillwork panels and two of the grillwork panels were installed upside down. The hotel is full of unique design pieces that come throughout the country. The hotel designed in the Italian Renaissance style using Colorado red granite and Arizona sandstone. The hotel is timeless elegance with a modern amenity but who would of think that’s one of the well-known haunted hotels in Denver. Our team came into the site visited without the knowledge of the haunted stories of the hotel. During the tour, we heard all the popular stories, events that had happened in the hotel and of course its history and architecture. That was one room in the hotel that I could feel the heaviness perhaps due to the haunted story, it was the room where a young child name Thomas who loved to run around and play there. In room 904, one of the legends in that time Denver socialite lived in that room from 1940 to 1955. The story of her life and heartbreak over a lost love were told during the hotel tour. After she passed away, there are many stories and witness her soul and strange events that take place in room 904. During the renovation, the switchboard suddenly began to receive calls from room 904. It seems impossible at that time because the room was undergoing renovation, had no telephone lines, carpet, lights or furnishing. In many years, the staff would smell chicken soup in the floor of room 904 but about two years now, the smell is no longer there. It seems that her soul is no longer linger in the room. So overall, the hotel is not haunted or anything. I feel like the hotel had a rich history, good and bad events, and served many famous guests that attracted the visitors to want to stay but it has many business challenges to keep the revenue due to the increase of Airbnb and other businesses. I’m glad that I got to learn more in-depth about his hotel and perhaps revisit in the future.

Blog #7- Cabin in the woods
The Cabin in the woods is an American horror film, follows with a group of college students who retreat to remote forest cabin where they fall victim to backwoods zombies and the technicians who manipulate events from the underground facility. The film capitalizes off the many themes/archetypes we have studied in the class with various types of horror that related to what have talked about: Vampires, Zombies, Werewolves, and Possession. The film focused on the fears of Americans while looking at different types of archetypes, the fear and anxieties of society at that time as well.
There is an “uncanny” element exemplified in the film, such when Marty rescues Dana. They discovered under the grave, which they descend into the underground facility, where a menagerie of monsters is imprisoned. They released the monster, in the mind of realizing that the objects in the cabin’s cellar gave victims the opportunity to choose the agents of their own deaths during the rite. During that time, Hadley is killed by a merman and Sitterson escapes to the lower level. They discovered the temple and participating in an annual ritual sacrifice to appease the gods. During the ritual, Dana was attacked by a werewolf, while zombie patience Buckner appears and kills the director. The temple floor collapses and a giant hand emerges destroying the facility and the cabin itself. Lastly, I think that this is the last film we watch in the class because this film can be analyzed in many ways depending on the audience, it evolves with horror and comedy genre that unexpected compared to the traditional horror film.

THE EXORCIST
In the film, the exorcist is an American supernatural horror film showcase the possession of a 12-year old girl and her mother’s attempts to win her back through an exorcism which conducted by two priests. This film has shown the connection between culture and history behind a single mother and the religion. As we are aware, the Exorcist reflects the growing tensions in American society between traditional family values of the ’60s & ’70s and the anti-natalist movement. The obsession with possession and demon children because of children or a teenage girl being used as a metaphor for diabolical evil. Also, children appear to be weak and easily persuaded, which allow evil to take control. According to the haunted house article, throughout the 70s, women’s sexuality became the focus of numerous horror films, exposing America’s nervousness over the sexual revolution, abortion and the changing nature of the family. In the sexual revolution, women became frightening to the family value, have the freedom to experiment with sex and to imagine a life with more than one partner. It became an extension of the politics of liberation in the 60s. Women started using birth control for sexual pleasure, which could lead to terrible consequences. In the sense, the traditions and rules have broken off and it’s not right. A family should never be changing, if so then there will be a disaster among that broken family, and we see that in the film as well as the American society in the 70s. Although we seen several horror films in the 70s mirrored the conservative critique of women’s liberation, there’s still that image of women in the current society, especially in the religious aspect.

Vampire Vs Werewolf
The vampire can be symbolizing many things-the conflicted about sex, race, and the immortality self but ultimately it symbolizes the evil. In the early history of vampire, it was believed that witches, who commit suicides were considered evil in life became vampires because the evil couldn’t be killed. Vampires were blamed for deaths of cattle and other animals and everything else that went wrong, so it was the evil of it all. Hollywood has been politicized the way vampires in our contemporary culture. The fictional vampires are good looking with a certain vulnerability to engage our sympathy as well as our revulsion. Hollywood conducted around the mythology of vampires, the symbolization of evil, sexuality, blood, and the night. The gothic genre coalesces around the vampire in the supernatural or inexplicable events, such as human coming to life, ghosts, spirits and of course vampires. Most of the stories that we heard are follows the conventions of fear and horror upon the supernatural elements like ghost spirit or vampire sucking blood. The anxieties that revealed through the concept of the vampires are the broader concerns about the institutions, social relations, child rearing, science, and spirituality. We fear our ability not be able to fight against the evils to protect our loved ones or ourselves. The problematic of racial/ gender stereotypes are reinforced throughout our history as well as by the concept of vampires. The gothic figure of the vampire may come to embody racial stereotypes and dominant fear about black men and women through representations of the vampire of American popular film. In the queen of the damn, the mother of vampires has represented as a black woman control all power of all the vampires. Whether human or vampires, race is a social construction.
The werewolf can be symbolizing varies things, but it represents our most base instincts, the untamed wildness, the animal side of our nature. In storytelling, the werewolf must be some part of the human begin- a part of us which is deep-rooted and possibly accessible. It also could be madness, which the full moon symbolizes that because the full moon is known to associate with episodes of mental distress and illness. The fears and anxieties that exemplified through the werewolf are humans. Humans are afraid of becoming one themselves because who would want to transform into a wolf and have animal instincts that cannot be controlled. This fear is understandable because we as humans are tempted to be afraid of the unknown. The werewolf was created to trigger our earliest fears by half human and half animal that hunted the living. In the modern time, werewolf seems to be reflected anxieties about the border between western civilization, male sexual deviance and religious uncertainty. The representation of our fears of bestiality and animalistic parts of ourselves are demonstrated through our uncontrollable primitive natures. It's natural to have desires of sexual nature but the risk and fear of the result of these desires can have very negative results. People can be vulnerable to the point of no turning back to a place of safety and control. Rape is often worrisome for someone who participates in sexual activities. The werewolf is of a violent and primal nature with whom can be unpredictable and forceful. The werewolves have evolved in our imagination through Hollywood films. From the film's teen wolf to twilight, werewolves have been portrayed as not only trustworthy and protector but even good guys. Often finding love with a feminine human of a beauty.
The vampire and werewolf are similar in that they are both mythological creatures with supernatural abilities. They both symbolize the devil through a humanoid pathway. However, the vampire and the werewolf are often depicted as enemies of each other. An example of this is in the movie Twilight. This film showcases to exposing creatures battling one another with human romantic interests between them. They became popular among young teens and young adults. Those were captivating with the series were asked to choose between “Team Edward” and “Team Jacob”, claiming their public interest to the supernatural boyfriend for the series' females lead character. The fear from these monsters has been removing with the romanization through pop culture’s love affair. The werewolf and vampire have taken the sexual tendency as its new output. Werewolves are the focus of humanity. They give in to their impulses and desires in forms beyond the physical and associated with the nature and the loss of control in favor of naturalism. They transformed into an animalistic form, vent those aggressions in a more naturalistic way against the unfeeling and inhuman violence of long-distance warfare. They offer a form of the fullest expression of self with no memory or responsibility for their actions. Also, they are representing the loss of control and losing identity to the passions. A werewolf has the ability to destroy and gained physical power, but this power is more bind than an offering of more complete self-determination because it’s a misleading feeling. In comparison, vampires represent a sense of super perfect self. In the modern world, the vampire is stylish, sexual, socially acceptable and wealthy, the perfect men for modern women. Vampires became beautiful monsters rather than living corpses. They got all the benefits of living in the past and ongoing life, not changing, not aging and not decaying. In the media, werewolves made the connection with the hippies, counter-culture warriors' hunger for a more expressive time, a man that given the freedom to howl. Human werewolf, you’ll notice the physical form with longer hair, sideburns or facial hair, strong build and someone withdrawal from society. In comparison to vampire, they always groomed, with no facial hair, slicked back hair kept short, fashionable attires and wealthy. In present, the media have formed a new representation that responded to the increasing a romanization of these monsters. Are they even consider monsters anymore? The monsters that used to be uncontrollable are now controllable, they are no longer monsters. Although Pop culture may have distilled these monsters down to two hot men, women desire but there’s so much beyond that that reach out to concerns in our culture.

Blog Post #5
The Werewolf is representing the Jungian shadow in a way that the conscious ego does not identify and the unknown side of the effect. Werewolf is known to be a human with ability to shapeshift into a wolf purposely or after being cursed. The fears and anxieties that exemplified through the werewolf are human. Human is afraid of becoming one themselves because who would want to transform into a wolf and have animal instincts that cannot be control. This fear is understandable because we as human is tented to be afraid of the unknown. Werewolf were created to trigger our earliest fears by half human and half animal that hunted the living. In the modern time, werewolf seem to be reflected anxieties about the border between western civilization, male sexual deviance and religious uncertainly. The fears of the animalistic/bestial self that represented in the werewolf are the ultimate of transgressing the border between human and animal. It illustrated a fear of the devil and his followers undermining human and society. The fears and anxieties were expressed through religion, sexuality and society. The literal transformation of man-into-werewolf represent the religious belief among Christianity because it a symbol of the devil threatening Christians, the wolves threating the sheep's according to the example of “the good shepherd” or the lamb of god. Overall throughout the history, werewolf was a symbolic for the devil that reflected a social anxiety of the devil could undermine Christian society through creatures that didn’t adhere to the border between humans and animals.

ZOMBIES
Zombies originated in Haitian Vodou, from a stolen soul to a spirit receptacle. Zombies was first encountered in the early 1900s, it has been viewed as exotic and mythical begins by Abrahamic religious communities within American culture. In the modern day, the incarnation of the zombies, as seen across pop culture horror novels and films is easily recognized and radically different from its historical roots. In our modern western culture, we can spot the gray, rotting flesh, the black eyes, the disheveled appearance, the wretched moaning, the bloody mouth flecked with flesh. The zombie's meanders through city streets, around small towns and along highways with no thought or desire but to consume everything it can- human flesh. However, zombies represent a fear that pervades society and a collective nervousness of destruction.
The contemporary representation of the zombie in the popular culture is represent American fears and anxieties held by the country at the time. In the modern day, Zombies are no longer frightening, they’ve become to symbolize people who cannot think for themselves. They are become as victim to society’s pressure and phases and follow authority blindly without questioning. The collective fears and anxieties that exemplified by zombies are linked with social groups that feared by White middle class American, ranging from immigrants to people of color. In the film “28 days later (2002)” zombies represent a prevalent fear: mass contagion, cause by a rage-inducing virus, which quickly spread throughout the world. During the time, AIDs was the issue topic in the early 2000s, the fear of a global pandemic was very real, and this could easily be seen in the film and other similar film at the time. The view of zombies might change over the centuries, but one thing has not changed is that zombie scares us by purging our darkest deeds.

Do you believe tarot card predict the future?
The history of tarot is deeply based on facts and can express only what can be demonstrated with evidence and trace from in depth understanding of the facts, the culture and the people. Myths can reveal truth but it’s often not what myth conveys on its surface. Tarot is originated sometime between 1420 and 1440 in Northern Italy. Its amid other experiments on creating a suit of triumphal cards and the images signified in the “High Gothic” to the early renaissance Italian culture. The tradition of playing card appeared in Europe and spread 75 years before the Triumphs were added to the deck. I found that it’s important to know tarot history and myth because tarot is a divination tool. It gives you a sense of foundation and stability. Tarot is whatever you want it to be if you ask me because it defines as a book of spiritual wisdom in picture form. It's open to interpretation but has an actual history and tradition surround it.
Do you believe tarot card predict the future? Well it might be a common question regarding tarot card, but cards are cards, just paper with printed images on them no more special or magical. In my opinion, we create our future, it’s not up to the cards to tell anyone what the future holds. A high intuitive reader can predict the future that is possible according to the past but if people lie then there’s no accuracy in response. Although I think readings are helpful in helping other connect their own dots so that they can better plan a course. I think that using card reading might be good for a coaching tool that help people reveal what bothers them most and which issues to focus on first.

QUEEN OF THE DAMNED
The Queen of the Damned both represent and revise the tradition of the vampire in a way that connected to vampire society, the fundamental law of the vampire, the destruction and darkness of it all.  The vampire Lestat is depressed because he misses being a mortal. He has emerged himself as a vampire who’s come out of the closet. He was asked during the news conference if he has anything to say for the vampire community, his answer was simply, “Come out, come out, wherever you are.” Lestat’s chronicles goes way back to the beginning, the man who made him, Marius, an old European who bit Lestat centuries earlier, tells him that vampires all over the world will be angered by the breaking of their unspoken vow of silence. One night, Lestat found his way to Akasha, he begins to fall for Akasha’s power. Marius warns him about the Queen Mother Vampire that she has no respect for anything, human or immortal. Jesse Reeves, a researcher for the paranormal studies group is intrigued by Lestat’s lyrics after hearing one of his song play on television. She told that group her theory that Lestat is really a vampire. Her mentor, David Talbot took her aside and told her about the man that made Lestat this way, Marius. Her mentor also shown her the journal of Lestat and gave her the book. In the journal, Lestat mentioned how he turned into vampire and how he awoke Akasha with his music. In the film, the real victim is the Queen of all Vampires – Akasha, who is so powerful that can even venture out in daylight. The Death Valley concert was where the movie reaches its climax. The vampires from everywhere attacking Lestat on stage. Later pitched battle break out when the queen of vampire wants to rule the world. She dismissed all the people as her food supply. Akasha was defeated by Lestat with the help of ancient vampires. Her power was diminishing, Maharet was the last person to drink the queen blood, killing Akasha. The film ended with Lestat and Jesse walking holding hand among mortal into the night.

Post-War Anxieties and Haunted Spaces
House on Haunted Hill
An American horror film “House on Haunted Hill”, released in 1959 that was produced and directed by B-filmmaker William Castle. The movie featured Frederick Loren, a millionaire who rents a haunted mansion for one-night event hosting a party for his wife, Annabelle, whom he believes that she after his fortune. He offers to give $10,000 to his guests that survives in the house for one night. During the stay, there is no communication with the outside world. The host presented with a pistol for each guest to fend off themselves from the ghosts. Frederick is convinced that his wife Annabelle tried to poison him to acquire his wealth. Annabelle is denying firmly, reasoning that its due to his suspicious to paranoia and jealousy. The guests are psychiatrist Dr. David Trent, newspaper columnist Ruth Bridges, test pilot Lance Schroeder, Nora Manning who works for Loren’s companies, and the house owner Watson Pritchard. They are all stranger to one another, with only commonalty in needing for money. The house owner Pritchard believes that the house is haunted by the ghost of those that murdered there, including his own brother. He gives a tour of the house, including the vat of acid basement which used by a previous resident who kill his wife. During that time, Lance and Nora remains behind explore the basement. Lance is locked in an empty room and Nora is confronted by a figure she takes for a ghost. Frederick gather everyone in the living room, gives each guest a gun for protection. His wife has warned everyone that he’s scheming for something. Nora decides not to stay, but the door locked early, which give no option for the guest but to stay. Lance and Dr. Trent heard a scream, come to find Annabelle’s corpse, hanged herself. They suggested everyone to stay in room in order to survives the night and shoot anyone who enters; thus, the innocents will have no reason to leave the room and the killer must admit his guilt. The secret lover, Dr. Trent meet up with Annabella, who faked her death. They both managed to manipulate Nora into killing Frederick. Mr. Loren was shot by Nora, when he entered the basement. Trent slipped in, dragging Loren into the vat of acid. Annabella came down to the basement checking on her husband is dead but she come to find a skeleton rises from the acid with Lore’s voice, accusing her with his death. She got push into the vat of acid by Loren, who was alive and revealing that he was aware of their plot all along. Nora told everyone that she shot Loren but Loren came to explain that he was aware of his wife and Trent plot of murdering him for his wealth. He claimed that it due self defense and will not be convicted. The house owner, Pritchard still believes that the house haunted and he will be the next victim.
The film reflected the economic class through the cast members attire, their demeanor and their desire for money. Annabella was a wife for a wealthy business man, whose living in a luxury and upper class. Fredrick was a wealthy man who can manipulate people with his money in order to kill his wife. Dr. Trent was a secret lover to Loren’s wife, plotting the murder to acquire his wealth. Lance and Nora were wanting to have the money for their personal purpose. During the post war, American men and women were complied with society’s expectations. The house represented an American microcosm of define the meaning of America, the vision of what it is has been and what it could be. In this film, there was some humor in the dialog which play off very well against the ghostly elements. The was a creepy atmosphere in the film and at least one leap jump from your seat shock moment. The film is timeless for the creepy fifties' horror movie, if you ask me. I think that the cast gives an outstanding performance during its time. However, in my opinion, I don’t believe that the house is haunted due to the ending of the film. The house owner was a big believer in the house being haunted due to his brother murders. I think it's more like a place of plotting for murders that pretreating the public eye among the situations. But I guess you can say that it’s a mystery that only ones that experienced it can determine that it’s real or unreal haunted.

“Why We Crave Horror Movies?”- Stephen King
The horror films might be a space to process the shadow side of our psyche because we want to fulfill our emotion and urge within ourselves. According to King, the reasons that we like horror movies are: to show that we are not afraid, to re-establish our feeling of normality, and to have fun. But the less obvious reason is that we want to fulfill that demand of our emotions, deep down that we want to let it out and satisfying our socially unacceptable urges. Watching horror films can cause a variety of side effects, depending on the individual. Sleeplessness is one of the most common side effects because people may have less sleep due to fear and anxiety from watching a scary movie. Horror movies are not my cup of tea but there are many best horror movies of all time such as “The Exorcist”, “Halloween”, “The Conjuring”, and “The cabin in the woods”. Whether people enjoy watching horror movies because they help to keep our insane human nature from getting out of control or just for fun, it’s all depending on the individual.

Myrtle Plantation Haunting
St. Francisville, Louisiana
The Myrtle Plantation is a former Antebellum Plantation built in 1796 by General David Bradford.
Tumblr media
Many believe the historic home is one of the most haunted locales in the United States.
The Myrtles has 22 rooms spread over two floors.
Tumblr media
The home is rumored to be on top of an ancient Tunica Indian burial ground, and is supposably the residence of at least 12 different ghosts and apparitions. Rumors of at least 10 murders occurred in the house, but historical records only indicate one fatality.
The murder of attorney, William Drew Winter.
Mr. Winter lived in the plantation from 1865 until 1871. An intruder was trespassing on the 10 acre land and shot William Winter. Winter struggled into the home and lost his strength climbing the staircase. He dropped dead on the 17th step of the stairs. To this day, visitors and employees alike, claim to hear his footsteps, only to thud silent on the 17th step.
The Legend of Miss Chloe
Tumblr media
Chloe was reportedly a slave owned by Clark and Sara Woodruff, past owners of the home. Legend calls Chloe being Mr. Woodruff’s mistress. Chloe supposably eavesdropped on the couple too often, forcing the Woodwards to cut off her ear.
In retaliation, Chloe baked a cake containing extract of boiled and reduced oleander leaves, which are extremely poisonous. Sara and her two daughters ate the cake, and painfully died from the poison intake. Chloe then was allegedly hanged by Clark Woodruff to escape punishment for infidelity. Her body was disposed of in The Mississippi River.
In 1992, the owner of the plantation was photographing the exterior of the outbuildings for the insurance company.
The home owner was alone at the time, and did not see anyone while taking the photograph.
This is the photo she captured.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The National Geographic Explorer filming crew identified the photograph as authentic and believe the apparition to be a female slave.
In May 1995, a patent researcher investigated the photo, and determined that all of the physical measurements of the apparition were of human dimensions and proportions.
Many say the phantom is Miss Chloe.
The Haunted Mirror
Tumblr media
Guests visiting the 217-year-old home claim that they’ve seen muddled handprints disappear and reappear on the glass. The prints allegedly belong to the slain Woodruffs. Others have declared that they’ve seen dark liquid dribble down the length of the mirror, and no amount of cleaning can remove the obscure residue.
